The Government of Ghana has condemned the unilateral invasion of the Republic of Venezuela and the capture of its President, Nicolas Maduro, by the United States of America.

According to the government of Ghana, the incident was a gross violation of international law and the UN Charter.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday, January 4, 2026 also condemned President Trump’s recent comments of sending US oil companies into the country and running things until such time as the US deems it appropriate to handover power, as reminiscent of the colonial and imperialist era.

In light of this, Ghana has urged the immediate release of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, and demands a de-escalation of the situation, as the precedent undermines the world order, the principle of sovereignty and territorial independence.

Parts of the statement read, “The Government of the Republic of Ghana is alarmed at the unilateral and unauthorised invasion of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela by the United States of America”

“These declarations are reminiscent of the colonial and imperialist era and should have no place in the modern global order,” the government warned.

“The Government of Ghana calls for immediate de-escalation and the release of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, President Trump has said that the US will be running the North American country till a “proper and judicious transition” is made.

He stated, “We’re going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition. So we don’t want to be involved with having somebody else get in, and we have the same situation that we had for the last long period of years.

“So we are going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition. And it has to be judicious, because that’s what we’re all about,” he said.

This follows an earlier announcement that the US has carried out a large-scale strike on the capital city of Caracas, capturing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife.

According to President Trump, the Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife were captured and flown out of the country.

Donald Trump, in a post, stated, “ The United States of America has successfully carried out a large-scale strike against Venezuela and its leader,  President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the country.

This operation was done in conjunction with the U.S. Law Enforcement”.

The post further revealed, “Details to follow. There will be a News Conference today at 11 A.M, at Mar-a-Lago. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President Donald J. Trump”.

Reports emerging around this situation suggests the US has, for years, accused Nicolas Maduro of “drug trafficking and narco-terrorism — linking him to criminal networks that export illegal drugs, especially fentanyl, into the United States; corruption and repression — claiming his government is illegitimate, unfairly rigged elections, and has jailed political opponents; threat to US security and regional stability — including designating Venezuelan criminal organizations as foreign terrorist groups”.

“The US Justice Department previously indicted Maduro on federal charges, and the Trump administration offered a reward of up to $50 million for information leading to his arrest”.
