Dr Johnson Asiama, the Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, has explained his decision to resign from the Board of Directors of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) after revealing he resigned about five months ago.
According to the BoG Governor, he no longer participates in GoldBod board meetings.
Dr Johnson Asiama disclosed that the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140), does not require the Bank of Ghana Governor personally to serve on the GoldBod Board.
The BoG Governor explained that although the law provides for the Bank of Ghana to have representation on the GoldBod Board, the representative need not be the Governor.
He explained that the legislation allows either the Governor or another Bank of Ghana official of the required rank to represent the central bank.
Speaking in a viral video shared on X, the BoG Governor stated, “I resigned from the GoldBod Board about five months ago or so. I do not attend board meetings at the GoldBod at all”.
“The law that governs the activities of the GoldBod, there’s a provision there for the Bank of Ghana to be represented either by the Governor or any other official up to the rank of a director,” he said.
“It does not necessarily need the Governor to be there.”
Dr Johnson Asiama revelayions comes on the heels of concerns raised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over his membership of the GoldBod Board and whether his dual roles could create a conflict of interest.
Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, a Former Finance Minister and NPP MP for Karaga, raised the issue during an NPP press briefing on September 1.
The NPP concerns focused on the relationship between the central bank and GoldBod, including the Bank of Ghana’s involvement in financing GoldBod’s gold-purchasing operations and reported losses associated with the domestic gold purchase programme.
Meanwhile, some months ago, Blakk Rasta, a Ghanaian reggae artiste and media personality, said GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi has become a sacrifice in the intense power play happening between Ghana’s Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) Dr Johnson Asiamah.
According to the reports, the Intense power play between the Finance Minister and BoG Boss is threatening GoldBod operations, which is led by Sammy Gyamfi.
He highlighted that there is a danger looming, and if the Mahama government are not careful, GoldBod may crash.
Speaking on The Black Pot, Blakk Rasta narrated the whole power play between the Finance Minister and BoG Boss that threatens GoldBod operations, saying, “GoldBod is rocked by the Ato Forson and Johnson Asiamah power play.
Now, GoldBod is the heartbeat of the Ghanaian economy, and the boss of GoldBod is a guy called Sammy Gyamfi. He’s been able to use his brains to drive the country around the GoldBod, and the country is doing so well.
The economy of the nation is booming. Long story cut short, the dollar started to show a lot of respect to the Ghanaian cedi from when the gold board was established. Many were shocked by the speed with which the Mahama government was able to resurrect the dead economy that Nana Addo and Bawumia unleashed on Ghanaians”.
He added, “Economists around the world, including economists from Bloomberg, have all been shocked at the rapidity with which GoldBod has been able to fix the Ghanaian economy. So Sammy Gyamfi is a poster kid of John Dramani Mahama. He doesn’t play with him at all. This guy here is a very, very philanthropic guy. A lot of people love him. When you meet him, at least he’ll give you a handshake that is so wet with grease. As to what kind of grease it is, I wouldn’t be able to tell. But this is Sammy Gyamfi.
There’s a danger looming, and if we are not careful, GoldBod may crash. Remember where you heard it first. There’s a power play, presumably, between two giants. One is the finance minister of the republic, and the other is the boss of the Bank of Ghana”.
Blakk Rasta highlighted that Ato Forson and Dr Asiamah, who are supposed to work hand in hand, are rather fighting each other because the two have presidential ambitions.
He alleged that the two giants are trying to do whatever they can to put something aside for the rainy day.
He added, “Ato Forson is still forcing, but his forcing is based on GoldBod; then there is also Dr Johnson, the governor of the Bank of Ghana. The two are supposed to work hand in hand. Ato Forson and Johnson Asiamah with Goldbod in the middle. They are both supposed to push GoldBod left, right, and centre, rock it nicely on the very, very turbulent waters to be able to arrive safely.
But it looks like the two of them have a conflict, and this is exclusive”.
Blakk Rasta further alleged, “These are the two giants. And they are fighting. Why are they fighting? Maybe they are disagreeing, and it’s all about GoldBod information reaching me has it that the two allegedly have presidential ambitions; Ato Forson is eyeing the presidency. Dr Johnson is also eyeing the presidency, and as it stands, they both are trying to do whatever they can to put something aside, and when I say something aside, understand for the rainy day.
What is the rainy day? Their personal ambition to succeed the president, and that is rocking GoldBod badly. Sammy Gyamfi has become the sacrifice. He is sitting on GoldBod, and two giant elephants under an umbrella are fighting. This man here has so much experience. He is 10 years older than Ato Forson. He has so much experience in banking. This is what he wants, and we are hearing that some of them may even be compromised with the IMF and the World Bank; as to what that means, I don’t know.
My brother, they say when two elephants are fighting, it is the grass that suffers. Do they really have personal ambitions to succeed the president? What is the president saying? Is he going to crack the whip, or is he going to look at Ato Forson and say oh forcing you are still forcing, so stay, ah Dr Johnson, you two, you have a lot of experience, okay, you two stay and then weaken GoldBod”.
