John Abdulai Jinapor, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, has ordered the Executive Officer of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), Ing. Mark Awuah Baah, to step aside.

Ing. Mark Awuah Baah has been ordered to step aside pending investigations into a fire outbreak at the Akosombo Power Control Centre.

In an announcement made by Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on X on Sunday, April 26, 2026, read, “Minister for Energy and Green Transition has asked the CEO of GRIDCo to step aside pending investigations into fire incident at Akosombo power control centre”.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu further disclosed that there has also been a major shake-up in the leadership of the ECG in the Ashanti Region.

His post added, “Also, there has been a major shake-up in the leadership of the ECG in the Ashanti Region”.

He further disclosed that, “ At 2 pm tomorrow, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon John Jinapor, will hold a major briefing on recent developments in electricity distribution”.

Following the news, netizens on X have alleged a plot to sabotage the Mahama government, resurfacing the NDC supporters’ concern over when they called for the removal of Ing. Mark Awuah Baah, a well-known NPP sympathiser, following President Mahama’s swearing in.

A post by the Ghana Chronicle on X stated, “Right after Mahama was sworn in, NDC supporters were calling for his removal because he is a well-known NPP sympathiser, who has even held party positions at the regional level.

As usual, he was playing politics with our electricity”.

“A die-hard NPP member working as the CEO of GRIDCo under the NDC is something I can’t understand.

The NPP would never keep a die-hard NDC member in such a position”, one more netizen added.

Meanwhile, some other netizens reacting to the development stated, “Why should you continue to wait for situations to get out of hand before actions are taken? Please, you guys should learn to be smart if you really want to transform the system”.

One X user added, “NDC party if always in government wants to be father for all, do you think if it were NPP will they allow these engineers to still be at post, the downfall of the Prof JEA Mills first team was allowing President JAK mmdce and the DCE to still be at post”.

A netizen added, “Don’t bring your dirty politics into ECG to hide your incompetence by targeting perceived NPP elements. If it is in your DNA to get rid of Ashantis in govt institutions, say so. We were told the problem emanated from Ghana Gas and later Akosombo Dam transformer, these are all lies”.

“A Country we live in bcus of some people political interest, they want the country to be destroyed. “

I say again, both the NPP and NDC must be put aside for once

I always imagine if Ghanaians had voted for a new party and all these are happening,

They would say they lack political experience”, one X user stated.

A netizen stated, “Every day, the Kwashieman enclave is always off from morning till the next day, while just a few distances away, there’s light. Kwashieman residents are bearing the brunt of power outages. We’re really tired. Achimota ECG is deliberately taking Kwashieman off the grid daily”.

One more Ghanaian wrote, “If there are truly saboteurs behind these power outages, then some people are genuinely evil. How wicked, heartless, and shortsighted can one be to deliberately sabotage something that benefits every Ghanaian, simply because your party is no longer in power? What kind of destructive nonsense have we normalised as citizens?”.

In the meantime, a spokesperson for the Energy Ministry, Richmond Rockson, has announced that Ghana has lost 1,000MW of power generation due to a fire outage at the Akosombo Dam.

In a post he wrote, “We have lost over 1,000MW of power generation due to a fire outage, which has led to the shutdown of the Akosombo Dam. Engineers are actively working to restore the power supply as quickly as possible.

Please bear with us as we work through this situation. We appreciate your patience and understanding”.
