The Minority in Parliament has told President John Dramani Mahama to hand over power to the NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to lead the country if he cannot run the government.
According to the Minority, the Speaker of Parliament and the Majority are wasting valuable parliamentary time despite the Speaker’s emergency recall of the House.
The Minority said the Speaker rudely recalled them for recess, wasting three out of the five days for the emergency meeting of Parliament as key businesses for the recall stall.
Dr Mahama Tiah Abdul Kabiru, the Member of Parliament for Walewale, speaking on behalf of the Minority, called on the government to show greater seriousness and commitment in conducting its business in Parliament.
He further urged the Mahama government to hand over to Dr Bawumia if there is no direction or leadership in their government.
Speaking to journalists after the House adjourned, Dr Mahama Tiah Abdul Kabiru stated, “If there is no direction or leadership in this government, they should better hand over to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to lead us so that we can get government business ongoing”.
Dr Mahama Tiah Abdul Kabiru added, “The Speaker ‘rudely’ recalled us from our recess where we were engaging with our constituents as part of our civic and parliamentary responsibility to the people of Ghana.
Even though we in the Minority had other businesses of equal importance, i.e. a motion filed by the Minority to investigate the losses that have been occasioned by GoldBod, the Speaker was very clear on Monday that he wanted to limit the business of the House to those matters that necessitated the recall of Parliament.
We reluctantly agreed. But you have seen that today is the third day of the five days we were recalled to sit. Effectively, we have wasted about 75% of the time,” he said.
He added, “I am seeing a situation where the government want us to rush through a single day of everything. That has been very characteristic of this government. That is not democracy.
Even when they were going to address you, they didn’t have numbers to come stand and explain why they are adjourning the house. The minority we are here in our numbers to support them to do the government business; yet still the government is at large”.
Also, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Minority Chief Whip, challenged the Majority Caucus to explain its failure to execute government business despite the emergency recall.
However, First Deputy Majority Whip Comfort Doyoe has blamed the delay on ministerial vetting by the Appointments Committee.
She disclosed that concerns raised by the Minority over the short notice had affected the schedule.
Comfort Doyoe stated, “We called the house to come and sit and work, and we are working, so why are they complaining? There are a series of committee meetings and other things concerning the vetting of the two ministers and the judges.
If we don’t recall this house and they vet the ministers, there will be nobody to approve them to go back to their sector ministries to work on their budgets. So that’s the main reason why we are here.
If not because the Minority was complaining too much, they would have started the vetting yesterday, we approved them today, then tomorrow we do two or three businesses. Friday, we adjourn early to join Speaker at the Kumasi Sports Stadium,” she said.
