Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, a Spokesperson for Bernard Antwi Boasiako, commonly known as Chairman Wontumi, has provided an update on the former Ashanti Regional chairman’s condition at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison ahead of the party’s Delegates Conference.
According to Dr Boakye-Danquah, Wontumi has now spent 72 days in Nsawam when he visited him on Monday, September 28, 2026, to check up on him.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 29, Dr Boakye-Danquah detailed that his visit reaffirmed what he described as the NPP leadership’s commitment to Chairman Wontumi and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s resolve to secure his release.
He disclosed that during the visit, they reflected on the 72 days Chairman Wontumi has now spent in custody.
According to him, Wontumi described the period as an opportunity for “sober reflection on humanity” and a deeper relationship with God.
He added that the experience had also shaped Chairman Wontumi’s perspective on leadership, resilience and service to the party and the country.
Dr Boakye-Danquah also recalled a message Wontumi gave him on July 20, 2026, which he said had remained a guiding principle.
“Work hard for the party and bring Dr Bawumia to power as President of Ghana in 2028/2029,” Dr Boakye-Danquah stated.
He further added that Chairman Wontumi expressed appreciation to his family, friends, loved ones and NPP supporters for the prayers and support extended to him during his time in custody.
“He is fine, he is strong, and God is with him,” Dr Boakye-Danquah said in the statement.
Meanwhile, Regina Wiafe Antwi, an elder sister of incarcerated Chairman Wontumi, has died.
The news was revealed by former NPP Ashanti Regional Communications Officer Paul Yandoh who disclosed the news.
Paul Yandoh revealed that Regina Wiafe Antwi was deeply affected by Wontumi’s incarceration, disclosing that the woman reportedly collapsed after her brother was arrested and imprisoned, which he claims contributed to her death.
The NPP man revealed that Wednesday, September 30, 2026, marks the one-week observance of the late woman, which will take place at Kuntanase in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking in an interview on Nhyira FM, Paul Yandoh stated, “Due to the maltreatment and jailing of Wontumi, his sister collapsed and has eventually died. Tomorrow marks her one-week celebration”.
He further revealed that Wontumi’s father had been deeply affected by the development and had stopped eating properly.
According to Paul Yandoh, Wontumi’s father was unable to eat when food was served to him because of his distress over his son’s incarceration.
Meanwhile, Chairman Wontumi’s bail application pending his appeal has been adjourned to October 15, 2026.
Reports suggest the adjournment followed the failure of Chairman Wontumi and his lawyers who failed to appear before the court for the hearing.
However, the Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, was present in court for the proceedings.
He disclosed to the media that the court is expected to consider the bail application when the case resumes on October 15.
It will be recalled that Chairman Wontumi has filed an application at the High Court seeking to be released on bail pending the determination of his appeal against his conviction and prison sentence.
Wontumi’s legal team is asking the court to grant his release while the appeal challenging the judgment is heard.
