How RNAQ ex-wife Joana paused school to hustle to support him

As Ghanaians continue to discuss the divorce between Ghanaian business mogul Richard Nii Armah Quaye (RNAQ) and his ex-wife, Joana Coffie the story of how the couple met Senior High School has surfaced.

According to the an alleged cousin of Joana, she paused school to support Richard Nii Armah Quaye.  

A netizen on X sharing the story stated, “She paused school to support him. As the money came, he started changing – Cousin speaks on Joana Quaye’s marriage to RNAQ

An alleged cousin of Joana Quaye has opened some keys about the ongoing settlement d!spute involving the former wife of Bills Micro-credit founder Richard Nii Armah Quaye.

Speaking in an interview with UK-based Ghanaian TikTok personality Tr0uble Carlos, the woman, identified as Abena revealed  the role Joana played in her former husband’s early life and career.

According to her, Joana met Richard Nii Armah Quaye at age 18 shortly after completing SHS in 2002, and the two later began dating.

“She met him when they were both still young and trying to find their way,” Abena said.

She went on to claim that both gained admission to the University of Professional Studies, Accra, but Joana allegedly gave up her place after being persuaded to put her education on hold and work while RNAQ completed his studies.

“She decided to pause school and support him until he was done,” Abena stated.

Abena further alleged that her cousin made financial contributions toward his education both in Ghana and abroad, and later supported the establishment of Bills Micro-credit.

She also spoke about chállenges within the marriage, claiming things began to change as success came.

“As the money was coming, the man started changing,” she said.

Also, court documents sighted from the  petition filed by Joana Coffie during the divorce proceedings at the Dansoman High Court detailed, “… From somewhere in 2002, when they both completed senior secondary school, the petitioner tendered a picture of them taken in 2002 as Exhibit D without objection. It also means they were involved in a love relationship for several years before they finally tied the knot in 2010.

“… After their education, the petitioner worked at Makola as a shop attendant in a textile boutique, while the respondent worked at his mother’s drinking bar, preparing cocktails of local brews for sale,” part of the document stated.

“… The petitioner, after dropping out, worked at two fast-food restaurants as a cashier and was able to save most of her wages. The couple opened a joint account with S.G. S.S.B Ltd and later invested the funds in a product operated by Data Bank Ltd, which matured in 2018 with a value of GH¢10,151.17,” the document noted.

“… In the following year (2009), the respondent completed his studies and returned to Ghana unemployed. The petitioner was then working with Unibank Ltd as a temporary bulk teller at the Kaneshie branch.

“The respondent, together with a friend, Ankama, pitched a business idea to the petitioner and convinced her to invest. She withdrew nearly GH¢3,000 from her account and gave it to the respondent as start-up capital for the microfinance business,” the document added.

The brouhaha follows, RNAQ who have been locked up in a bitter divorce alimony battle with ex-wife Joana for the past four years.

Mrs Joana Quaye was married to Richard Nii Armah-Quaye for sixteen (16) years and has three (3) children with him.

The High Court presided over by Justice Kofi Dorgu on 20th January, 2026, in his final orders despite evidence showing that Richard Nii Armah Quaye established his famous company, Quick Credit & Investment Micro-Credit Limited (renamed Bills Micro Credit Limited) with Joana Quaye as shareholders, out of which RNAQ built his wealth and established numerous other companies, the judge granted to the wife only one-third share of a house at Dansoman, GHC300,000 as financial provision and GHC5,000 to be paid by RNAQ each month for the upkeep of all the three children.

Mrs Quaye cited that all the properties owned by RNAQ, including houses at Trassacco Estate, East Legon and other rich neighbourhoods in Accra, a Rolls-Royce car, Bentley, Range Rover and other luxurious vehicles and companies were all acquired by RNAQ after their.

Joana Quaye has since hired prominent Accra-based law firm, Dame & Partners, as her new lawyers to pursue an appeal against the award following the court orders in what she described as “being given a raw deal”.
