Sammi Awuku, the Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, has boldly declared that he is not under any Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) investigation.
It will be recalled that unverified reports on social media over the weekend claimed Sammi Awuku was detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Multiple Social media posts on August 16 alleged that Sammi Awuku was detained by EOCO over alleged financial irregularities during his tenure as the National Lottery Authority (NLA) boss.
However, EOCO or Sammi Awuku has not issued a confirmation or denial.
Sammi Awuku later denied the reports of the arrest by EOCO.
In a video on TikTok, Sammi Awuku dismissed the reports showing him in Kumasi with popular Appiah Stadium.
He quizzed how he could have been arrested on Saturday, August 15, 2026, when he was in the Eastern Region participating in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) regional elections.
Sammi Awuku stated, “Claims that I was arrested on Saturday are completely false. Yesterday we had our regional elections, and today, Sunday, I am here in Kumasi”.
However, Sammi Awuku, in a recent interview on UTV, vehemently denied having been arrested or invited by EOCO and urged the public to verify information before sharing it online.
According to Sammi Awuku, he has not been invited by EOCO, nor is he under investigation.
Sammi Awuku stated, “I have not been invited, and I am not under investigation. I am a defender of free speech, and I have said on this platform that the only way to confront hate speech is with more speech.”
“My advice to the young people who share such news is that there is nothing wrong with finding out and cross-checking, but when it becomes deliberate, it becomes a problem,” he stated.
Meanwhile, a netizen some weeks ago alleged that Sammi Awuku will be the next NPP member subjected to an Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) investigation.
The netizen claimed that the grounds for inquiry centre on command responsibility, specifically under the principle that as head of the institution, he “ought to have known” about potential financial losses incurred.
He further alleged that Sammi Awuku will be under investigation because he is loud against the Mahama government.
In a post shared on X, the netizen alleged, saying, “Unconfirmed reports Whispers Media Network has gathered from political sources suggest that former National Lotteries Authority (NLA) Director-General, Hon Sammi Awuku may be the next subject of an Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) investigation.
The alleged grounds for inquiry centre on command responsibility, specifically under the principle that as head of the institution, he “ought to have known” about potential financial losses incurred by the state.
Sources emphasise that the underlying cause for this intended action by EOCO is that Awuku is too loud against the Mahama government.
Sources further claim that EOCO is withholding formal action until Parliament enters recess.
….Just look at this nonsense. We all dey here”.
