Samira Bawumia, the former Second Lady of Ghana, has said she never imagined becoming the wife of a politician.
According to Samira Bawumia, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was working in the banking sector when they got married, adding that she became a politician’s wife overnight.
She further disclosed that her transition into political life came unexpectedly after her husband was offered a political role.
Speaking at an event organised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the United Kingdom, Samira Bawumia stated, “When I married my husband, he was working at the bank. He is an economist, right? I didn’t marry a politician. Never in my wildest dreams did I think, in fact, I didn’t want to marry a politician”.
“I never imagined that I would be one. And then I woke up one day, my husband was being offered [a political position]. We didn’t sleep for a night,” she recounted.
“So overnight, I became a politician’s wife. I made the best of it,” she said.
Samira Bawumia used her experience to encourage women to embrace opportunities even when they do not feel completely prepared or confident.
She stated, “If we wait until we feel completely confident already, then many of us will never begin. Many of us will never apply for that position. Many of us will never start that business”.
“Many of us will never go back to school, or write that proposal, or contest that election, or speak up in the meeting. So please, just do it. Raise your hand.”
Some Ghanaians sharing their thoughts about the video stated, “Wife of the greatest liar Ghana politics has produced must be quite an achievement”.

Samira married Bawumia in 2004. Bawumia was already Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (2006-2008) – that’s one of the most political appointments in the country. He was appointed by President Kufuor.
When Akufo-Addo offered him running mate in 2008, he was literally choosing a high-profile technocrat from the central bank. That’s not a random overnight offer to a private citizen – it’s a very political trajectory. They had been in that world for years.
