Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the former Majority Leader of Parliament, has hit back at Gabby Otchere-Darko following the claim that NPP Members of Parliament in the Ashanti Region preferred community roads to flyovers.
The former majority leader lamented that he does not understand why Gabby would say that.
According to him, on numerous occasions, he has spoken about the Suame Interchange, adding that the MPs started talking about these interchanges during President Kufuor’s time.
Speaking in a recent interview on UTV, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu quizzed, “He said he has been in meetings where the statement he made was said. What I want him to tell us is the meeting he is referring to. Where did the said meeting happen?”
He added, “On numerous occasions, I have spoken about the Suame Interchange, which is part of an inner city circle, which starts from Anloga Junction… We were going to build an interchange there during President Kufuor’s era. From there, if you take your left, it takes you to the Airport Roundabout, where there is another interchange… So on numerous occasions we have spoken about interchanges, and Parliament has even approved loans to get them done”
“So, I don’t understand why Gabby would go and stand somewhere to say that we said we don’t want interchanges. We started talking about these interchanges during President Kufuor’s time. When Dr Anane was the Roads Minister, we went to launch them at KTI. Where was Gabby at that time, for him to come and say we said we don’t want interchanges?”, he quizzed.
Also, Eugene Boakye Antwi, the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Subin, has said there was a serious fight between Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko and the party’s 2024 vice-presidential candidate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO).
According to Eugene Boakye Antwi, the fight was on an NPP platform regarding comments made by Gabby Otchere Darko about NPP MPs in the Ashanti Region, claiming they wanted “communal roads and not flyovers.
Speaking on Nhyira FM, Eugene Boakye Antwi stated, “Look, where we have gotten to, they have to shut up. Here they have taken the party to; they should leave it for us to fix. They should keep quiet. They are annoying people with the kind of things they are saying”.
He added, “Yesterday, there was a serious fight between him and NAPO on the platform. It looks as if we don’t know what we are doing”.
Eugene Boakye Antwi, further alleged that former finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta told them in a caucus meeting in parliament that elections are not won win roads.
He further added, “When it gets to a point, NPP members want to put themselves in trouble. If you say this, and someone else goes to explain. You people have been bringing up the issues. I was an MP. What he is saying, I know he is not being truthful.
If you want the truth, the NPP members listened to me when we had a caucus meeting in parliament, when Ken Ofori-Atta came, he looked into our faces, the MPs and told us that we don’t use roads to win elections”.
He added, “You can call any MP who was in the room. We went to a caucus meeting, all the MPs in Ghana met in the parliament house. He told us we don’t use roads to win elections.
They should let sleeping dogs sleep. When some of us hear these things when you speak and you are not being truthful, we will come and explain it”.
Eugene Boakye Antwi’s comments come following New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, following his recent comment regarding some NPP Ashanti Region MPs.
