Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, has given his verdict on the Minister of Agriculture, Eric Opoku.
According to Afenyo-Markin, he respects Eric Opoku as a person, but as the Minister of Agriculture, he is not impressed with his work.
Speaking on TV3 New Day in an interview with Roland Walker, the minority leader stated, “I respect Mr Eric Opoku as a person, but as Agricultural Minister, I’m not impressed”.
Some Ghanaians reacting to Afenyo-Markin’s remarks stated, “But who even wants the opinion of the NPP, who are in no doubt the most incompetent and corrupt party ever to manage this country?”.
One X user added, “Even the good that the NDC is delivering is not appreciated by you and your cohorts in the NPP, so it’s no news. Next joke please…”.
Another netizen added, “Did he state what his expectations are so that the minister can take note? Since we are building a Ghana for all?”.
It will be recalled that Afenyo-Markin in January 2026 called out the Minister of Agriculture, Eric Opoku, to tell Ghanaians what he has achieved since assuming office.
Afenyo-Markin recounted that Eric Opoku, in opposition, used to portray the Akufo-Addo government as ineffective.
He, however, acknowledged Eric Opoku’s intelligence but highlighted that he has failed to introduce any concrete policies to improve Ghana’s agricultural sector.
According to Afenyo-Markin, the Agric Minister must convene a press conference and highlight his achievements since assuming office.
Speaking at a conference on Monday, January 27, 2026. Afenyo-Markin stated, “So, for agriculture, let me ask our respected colleague Eric Opoku. He is a very intelligent parliamentarian. I don’t doubt his understanding of the agro sector, but talk is cheap. It is not about his talking.
Today I want to ask my respected colleague, Honourable Eric Opoku, the minister responsible for agriculture, to hold a press conference and tell Ghanaians the real policies that have been introduced to help promote agriculture,” Afenyo-Markin said.
He added: “There is none in the fisheries sector. The less said about them, the better. So really, this government talks so much in opposition, but in government, there is nothing they’ve done in the agro and fisheries sectors to promote growth. And we see it in that field.”
In other news, Eric Opoku has signed a landmark Public-Private Partnership aimed at tackling Ghana’s tomato imports by achieving national self-sufficiency.
On Thursday, April 16, 2026, the agreement was signed by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and FarmMate Limited to boost domestic tomato production.
Reports by Graphic stated, “The initiative is expected to expand tomato cultivation from about 1,000 acres currently under FarmMate’s operations to 40,000 acres nationwide. At full scale, it targets the production of 400,000 tonnes of fresh tomatoes annually, supported by processing capacity of 20 tonnes per hour and the delivery of 200,000 tonnes of tomato puree each year”.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, stated, “The implementation of the programme will significantly reduce Ghana’s import dependence, address price volatility, reduce losses during glut periods and ensure availability during lean periods”.
He further noted that the initiative would “ensure guaranteed off-take for farmers, improve incomes, productivity, and confidence to scale, deliver consistent quality supply for traders, processors, and consumers”.
