A private school Teacher has cried out about the difficulties she faces working at a school in Accra.
According to the Teacher, she teaches pupils from class 1 to Junior High School Three (JHS3) for a monthly salary of GH¢750.
She disclosed that her GH¢750 salary is not enough to meet her basic needs, especially as she has to pay for transport and rent as she lives alone in Accra.
Speaking on Starr FM, the Ghanaian Teacher stated, “I’m a teacher, and at the same time, I’m also going to school, and talking about our salary, it’s really bad. I’m actually a Ghanaian Language teacher. I’m currently teaching kids where I’m working, and I’m teaching from Class 1 to Form 3”.
“Only me, and then at the end of the month, I’m only given GH¢750. As I’m talking to you right now, the Form 3 students who completed did so well this year, and at least I’m hoping that maybe when school resumes, they’ll do something about my salary because it’s really bad,” she continued.
The private school teacher added, “I have to join a car every morning to get to school, and I’m renting. My parents are not here. I’m alone here in Accra and surviving, you know, if all these things are going on…”.
“With ladies too, we find other means because now, before you ask someone for money, the person wants to do something with you before they give you,” she stated.
“What helps sometimes is that at the end of the week, we are given some study fees like GH¢100,” she added.
Some netizens reacting to the news stated, “I always say this: if Ghana increases the minimum wage to 100ghs, some private schools and companies will still refuse to improve workers’ salaries unless the Labour Commission intervenes.
Ghana has jobs, but the real problem is poor pay and poor working conditions. Some wealthy business owners pay workers 500ghs, 700 or 800 while they themselves live comfortably and spend heavily abroad. The same jobs cleaners, security officers, school staff, hotel workers, shop attendants, etc. are done in Canada, the UK, the USA and Germany, yet many workers there can afford a better standard of living. The issue is not always the lack of jobs. It is the lack of decent-paying jobs and fair treatment for workers”.
A Facebooker added, “I don’t blame some proprietors for paying their workers a poor salary. I blame the govt for setting the minimum wage at Gh19 knowing very well that Gh19 is nothing to write home about”.
One last netizen added, “Private schools in Ghana are taking their teachers for granted for paying them nothing to write home about; some do not even pay SSNIT for their teachers”.
In other news, Dr Clement Apaak, the Deputy Education Minister, has announced a 20% salary top-up for teachers under the ‘Teacher Dabre’ Programme.
According to the Deputy Minister, teachers who accept posting to rural and deprived communities under the ‘Teacher Dabre’ Programme will receive a 20% salary top-up.
The Deputy Minister made this known during a courtesy call by top awardees of the Basic Education Certificate Examination.
He stressed that the Mahama government is determined to bridge inequalities in the country’s education system.
Dr Clement Apaak further added that under the government’s ‘Teacher Dabre’ Programme, teachers posted to rural and hard-to-reach communities will receive accommodation support in addition to the financial incentive.
He explained that the ‘Teacher Dabre’ policy is designed to make rural postings more attractive to guarantee that students in underserved communities have the same prospect to excel as their colleagues in urban centres.
“The President has a program that is going to reward teachers who take teaching positions in rural areas. These teachers would get 20% on top of their gross salary as a form of motivation,” he said.
