He argued that the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, must resign as Minority Leader due to the allegations of extortion levelled against him.

Kotin argued that the allegation alone had damaged the reputation of the Minority caucus and the NPP.

Speaking during a panel discussion on GBC’s Current Agenda on October 17, 2026, Kotin stated, “To save the face of the Minority, if Honourable Afenyo-Markin had any sense of dignity in him, he should have resigned as the Minority Leader”.

“He should have resigned because of the claim of him being an extortionist,” he added.

“So if you could file a defective application in court seeking defamation, what have you done to your party?” Mr Kotin questioned.

He further disclosed that his outfit had contacted some individuals within the party to understand why action had not been taken against the Minority Leader.

Kotin revealed that the response suggested that party members feared political repercussions.

He added, “When we contacted people within the party [to ask] why they are not pushing him to resign, it was an allegation of being connected to a certain politician, and if they push him now, the party will suffer some harm”.

“It is better to push him out now, repair whatever damage the party seeks to get, than leaving him there for another issue of this nature to come. Who will take Afenyo-Markin seriously again in this country?” he asked.

Kotin further lamented that the extortion allegation had dominated national discourse for weeks, distracting attention from pressing social and economic issues, including a recent World Bank report on financial losses.

Also, Ross Osei Owusu, a Private legal practitioner and member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) legal team, has said Alexander Afenyo-Markin should not remain Minority Leader in Parliament.

According to Ross Osei Owusu, Afenyo-Markin should not remain Minority Leader in Parliament if he fails to clear his name over allegations of extortion levelled against him by Sammy Gyamfi.

He argued that the Minority Leader must take steps to exonerate himself from the allegations, stressing that the matter should be pursued through the courts.

Osei Owusu recognised that the allegations remained unproven but argued that the Minority Leader needed to take steps to exonerate himself.

Speaking on GHOne TV’s Breakfast Review on October 15, 2026, Osei Owusu stated, “If he’s an extortionist, then we don’t want him as a Minority Leader of Parliament”.

“It remains an allegation, but he needs to purge himself of that allegation,” he stated, adding that Afenyo-Markin should be removed as Minority Leader if he failed to clear his name.

The development follows the Accra High Court dismissing the GH¢15 million defamation suit filed by the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, against the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi.

Afenyo-Markin’s suit stemmed from comments allegedly made by Sammy Gyamfi during JoyNews’ Newsfile programme, where he described the Minority Leader as an “extortionist”.

Meanwhile,  Lawyers for Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin have revealed that their client has instructed them to pursue his GH¢15 million defamation suit against Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi to its logical conclusion.

According to the Lawyers, despite the High Court decision to set aside the case over a procedural defect, their client still insists on pursuing the suit.

On Wednesday, October 14, 2026, a statement issued by Dehyena Chambers, the legal team, revealed that they have been instructed to pursue the matter and were awaiting a copy of the court’s ruling to determine their next course of action.

The lawyer disclosed that as of 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, the court registry had not made a copy of the ruling available to them.

“Our civil jurisprudence, including the Supreme Court authorities on non-compliance with procedural rules and Order 81 of C.I. 47, recognises that procedural irregularities are curable since equity looks at substance and not form,” the statement said.

“We will not be deterred by procedural setbacks. The Mills of Justice grind slowly, but with great surety,” the statement added. The court’s decision followed a finding that the writ of summons did not contain sufficient particulars of the alleged defamatory publication, rendering the action defective under the applicable civil procedure rules.
