Ibrahim Ali, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team, has claimed almost every Ghanaian can now afford an iPhone because of the improved economic conditions under the John Mahama government.
According to the NDC communicator, there has been a significant drop in the retail price of the iPhone 13 Pro Max, arguing that he purchased his iPhone 13 Pro Max for nearly GH¢12,000 during the tenure of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, but now that same model can be purchased for about GH¢4,600.
Speaking in an interview on Starr FM on September 23, 2026, Ibrahim Ali said, “I bought this phone for almost 12,000 Ghana cedis… and now if you get 4,600, you will get iPhone 13 Pro Max.”
“But under the turn of the NPP, it was almost over 12,000. It was over 12,000; now it’s around 4,000,” he stated.
“I’m speaking to facts. You can fact-check me,” he said.
“Today, iPhones are becoming like ordinary… almost everybody in Ghana can now afford an iPhone…that alone should tell you that, indeed, the government is performing,” he added.
Some Ghanaians reacting to his comments stated, “Lack of knowledge some people perish… Simple basic economics should tell you that an iPhone 13 Pro Max’s price at that time should be equivalent to the new iPhone 18 Pro Max. #Educationisthekey”.
One X user added, “If I were his lecturer during his university days, I would be ashamed to have taught him. How can he forget that gadgets depreciate in value over time? Apple has already released the iPhone 18 and 18 Pro Max, so naturally, the value of the iPhone 17 will drop. That is simply how technology and the gadget market work”.
“When politicians speak like this, don’t think they’re just idiots. They know the target they’re communicating to. And if you check the cs, you’ll see them. Why do you think Trump makes all those bizarre claims? As retarded as they sound, they know their target audience”, a netizen stated.
One X user added, “Hmm Nana Addo nearly killed us then times, prices of goods were increasing every blessed day, but since the new government came to power, prices of goods are stable as compared to before”.
Another netizen noted, “We have villagers in Ghana ooh. Do you know the versions Apple have released after the 13 series? 14, 15, 16, 17 and currently 18. Are you aware that when higher versions are released, the prices of lower versions come down? JJC”.
One last X user argued, “An iPhone getting cheaper with age is depreciation, not economic transformation.
The iPhone 13 Pro Max was released in 2021. Comparing its old launch price to today’s price and calling the difference “government performance” is like celebrating because an old car now costs less”.
Additionally, a netizen argued, “This is why our politicians are not really interested in a well-informed greater populace because they benefit greatly from their ignorance.
For him to even think this will make sense shows how little he thinks of the citizens”.
