Linda Ocloo, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, has clapped back a crtics following the criticism she received after she was crowned the best regional minister at the 6th Ghana Ministers of State Excellence Awards.
According to Linda Ocloo, she was not surprised by the award she received as she has done a lot and deserves the recognition.
Speaking on Asaase radio, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, stated, “I wasn’t surprised by the award I received. I keep telling people that if you make a little effort, people will recognise it, and they will give you that recognition. It empowers you to do more. So, for me, I know I have done a lot for the good people of Greater Accra. Expectations are high, though, but I think I have done a lot that I deserve the recognition”
Some Ghanaians reacting to the Greater Accra Regional Minister’s remarks stated, “I question the individual or collective responsible for her nomination for such an accolade, particularly in light of the observed deficiencies within Accra’s drainage infrastructure, poor hygienic practices of Accra’s inhabitants that go unpunished etc. Accra is expensive”.
Another X user added, “The biggest problem in this country is inferiority complex and intense celebration of mediocrity.
When people do the bare minimum, the average citizen sees it as the best thing ever happened because our standard for measuring is below the average.
The whole Greater Accra is almost flooded; street lights and traffic lights aren’t functional in most places; poor road networks; and many more.
The Regional Minister is to liaise with the various agencies and ministries to get these things done.
But here we are celebrating absolutely nothing.
Ghana 🇬🇭, we really have a long way to God”.
It will be recalled that following the announcement of Linda Ocloo, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, as the Best Regional Minister Award at the 6th Ghana Ministers of State Excellence Awards, all hell broke loose.
NPP communicator Kwasi Kwarteng launched a scathing critique of the awards.
According to Kwasi Kwarteng, although the flooding crisis in Accra predates Linda Ocloo, the judgement, timing, and wisdom of the award at the time, when Ghanaians are struggling with flooding, non-functional traffic lights, and dark streets, make no sense.
He argued that Linda Olcoo’s public conduct and pronouncements have repeatedly raised questions about her sense of judgment and discernment but have been awarded as the “Best Performing Regional Minister.”
In a post on X, Kwesi Kwarteng wrote, “This flood footage is not from last year. It was recorded on the very morning the Greater Accra Regional Minister was honoured as the “Best Performing Regional Minister.”
My argument is not that she did not deserve recognition simply because of the floods. The flooding crisis in Accra predates her tenure, and she cannot reasonably be held responsible for every challenge that has accumulated over decades. The real concern is one of judgment, timing, wisdom and leadership.
At a time when residents are struggling with non-functional traffic lights, dark streets due to faulty streetlights, deplorable roads, inconsistent power supply, and recurring floods, one would have expected a greater exercise of wisdom and a better appreciation of the public mood.
Unfortunately, this is a Minister whose previous public conduct and pronouncements have repeatedly raised questions about her sense of judgment and discernment”.
Also, Ghanaian actress Lydia Forson has punched holes in the 6th Ghana Ministers of State Excellence Awards, arguing that at a time when communities are flooding the ministers’ chose self-congratulatory exercise.
Lydia Forson on X added, “Someone decided to organise Ministers’ Awards, and not one person paused to ask whether it was a good idea?
You got dressed up and accepted awards from yourselves instead of being judged by the people you serve?
What kind of self-congratulatory exercise is this?
At a time when communities are flooding, this is the optics you chose?
Bad. Very bad look”.
