John Boadu, the former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), according to a new survey by Professor Smart Sarpong of Kumasi Technical University in collaboration with Feedback Africa, has taken a commanding lead in the party’s National Chairman race.
The survey, released on September 29, surveyed 9,882 respondents, comprising 5,276 NPP delegates and 4,606 stakeholders across 156 constituencies in 14 regions.
The Political Environment Assessment Survey 2026 fieldwork was conducted between September 10 and 28, 2026.
The survey recorded 46.5% support for John Boadu among all respondents in the National Chairman contest, followed by former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, who polled 24.8%.
Also, former National Chairman Paul Afoko polled 9.1%, while Sammy Crabbe recorded 5.5%. About 14.1% did not disclose their preference.
John Boadu also recorded the highest percentage among percentages with 47.9% among constituency officers, 41.5% among electoral area coordinators and among polling station executives, 46.8%.
Meanwhile, in the National Vice Chairman contest, Henry Nana Boakye recorded 37.6% among all respondents and 41.1% among delegates, with Mustapha Abdul-Hamid following with 14.5% among all respondents, while Kojo Fosu Boadu recorded 10.9% and former MP Nana Akomea 9.1%.
However, among delegates, Mr Abdul-Hamid recorded 14.6%, followed by Nana Akomea with 11.1% and Mr Fosu Boadu with 10.0%.
Professor Smart Sarpong’s survey also assessed other national executive positions.
In the National Organiser contest, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover recorded 47.4% among all respondents while Mavis Hawa Koomson recorded 50.1% in the National Women’s Organiser race.
Also, Clement Opoku Gyamfi recorded the highest figure in the National Youth Organiser contest, while Awal Mohammed led the Nasara Coordinator race; however, the report described both contests as still open.
Additionally, Professor Sarpong noted that respondents who did not disclose their preferences could influence the eventual outcome in contests where the differences between candidates are relatively narrow.
In related news, Anthony Karbo, the Chairperson of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Organisation Committee, has rejected claims that the party’s upcoming national executive elections will produce candidates affiliated with flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
According to Anthony Karbo, who leads the NPP into the 2028 general elections has already been settled, with Dr Bawumia having emerged as the NPP’s flagbearer.
He disclosed that the NPP’s national executive elections in Kumasi focus on selecting competent officers to help organise the party and pursue its 2028 agenda.
When asked whether there is a “Bawumia candidate” in the elections, Anthony Karbo responded: “There can’t be. There can’t be.”
Anthony Karbo stressed that the party will go to Kumasi to elect national officers who can contribute to the NPP’s preparations for the 2028 elections, rather than vote for candidates whose primary qualification is their perceived relationship with the flagbearer.
“What we are going to Kumasi to do is essentially to elect people who are going to see the 2028 project come to fruition,” he stated.
He urged the party delegates to focus on the competence and capacity of the aspirants as they choose officers for the party’s National Chairman, General Secretary, National Organiser, National Women’s Organiser and National Youth Organiser.
According to him, candidates should not rely on their proximity to Dr Bawumia to secure support from delegates.
“We are not voting for people who are close to somebody. We are voting for efficient party officers who can help deliver the project,” he said.
