K9 dog sniffs out 72lbs of prohibited yams, vegetables from Ghana at JFK airport

A Customs and Border Protection (CBP) K9 dog has helped US authorities intercept 72 pounds of yams, vegetables, and spices from Ghana at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in the United States.

The K9, named Rowdy, alerted officers to a bag arriving from Ghana that contained approximately 72 pounds of yams, vegetables and spices.

According to a post shared on X, all the items were prohibited and were stopped at JFK Airport.

Executive Asst. Commissioner Diane J. Sabatino praised Rowdy in her post for detecting the bag and preventing the prohibited items from entering the country.

She wrote, “K9 Rowdy had a busy day at JFK! He alerted to a bag from Ghana with 72 lbs of yams, veggies, and spices all prohibited. Thanks to Rowdy, these items were stopped at the border. Who’s a good dog?”.

The information gathered disclosed that the US maintains restrictions on certain agricultural products brought into the country to protect agriculture and prevent the introduction of pests and diseases.

Some netizens reacting to the development stated, “please bring K9 Rowdy to Ghana airport cos that’s the origin of this foodstuffs!!!”.

“Yams are prohibited? How?”, a netizen quizzed.

An X user added, “Rowdy should be sent to akwa ibom for cross-posting…he is a good dog and needs more international assignments so he can identify contraband easily”.

“My rowdy pup gets “homemade” sweet potato treats… slice a sweet potato thin, lay them on a parchment-lined sheet pan, bake at 350° for ~40 minutes total, flipping the slices every 10 minutes. Cool completely and keep them in a bag in your fridge. Soft and chewy, vegetable jerky”, a netizen added.

One X user added, “Thank you for stopping edible food from coming into this country, god forbid people be able to eat food that’s not currently under recall bc @SecKennedy is clearly just 4 rotting raccoons masquerading as a human.

Rowdy is a very good boi though”.

“Are you going to go into the African market and confiscate the yams too?

Because all these items displayed here are being sold there.

Waste of the dog’s time!”, a netizen added.
