James Agalga, the newly elected Majority Leader of Parliament, has assured Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and the Minority Caucus that his approach in parliament will hinge first on consensus building.
According to the Majority Leader, he would compromise when necessary and maintain communication with the Minority.
Speaking after officially assuming the role of Ghana’s new Parliament Majority Leader, taking over from Mahama Ayariga, James Agalga stated, “I want to assure Honourable Afenyo-Markin and the entire Minority bench that my approach in this House would hinge first on consensus building”.
“I mean, we can make compromises as and when necessary, and I assure you, I’ll give it to you. I would reach out, I would consult,” he stated.
“But at the same time, I would work to ensure that the Reset Agenda of our President is accomplished for the betterment of all of us,” he added.
In related news, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has sent a direct message to the new Majority Leader, James Agalga, but says he will miss the chamber relationship he had with Mahama Ayariga.
Afenyo-Markin assured James Agalga of his support in Parliament, but says his ultimate objective is to transform the Minority Caucus into the Majority.
According to Afenyo-Markin, he would not obstruct his counterpart but would instead provide an alternative perspective on government business.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, August 27, after Agalga formally assumed the Majority Leader position, Afenyo-Markin stated, “I am saying that you can find in me a friend. My job is not to obstruct you. My job is to offer a different lens to things you may not see”.
“I can promise you a well-researched dossier for all my debates. That I can promise you,” he added.
“My job really, my job really is to turn this Minority into Majority. That really is my job,” he stressed.
The Minority leader also cautioned Agalga against attempts to weaken or infiltrate the Minority Caucus as he begins his tenure as Majority Leader.
The development follows James Agalga officially assuming the position of Majority Leader following a communication from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin announcing changes.
Earlier, Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, had said President John Dramani Mahama’s announcement of Builsa North MP James Agalga as the new Majority Leader was not in accordance with parliamentary procedure.
Speaker Bagbin highlighted that the President does not have the authority to formally communicate a change in the leadership of a parliamentary caucus to the Speaker.
According to Speaker Bagbin, under Parliament’s Standing Orders, any change in the leadership of the Majority or Minority Caucus must be formally communicated to the Speaker by the General Secretary of the political party.
