Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President of Ghana and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2028 presidential candidate, has broken his silence following the devastating floods across parts of the country.
Dr Bawumia, in his post, revealed that his thoughts and prayers are with the thousands affected by the floods and appealed to emergency services and relevant state institutions to intensify efforts to assist communities.
In a social media message issued on Monday, June 29, Dr Bawumia stated, “This morning, my thoughts and prayers are with the thousands of our people affected by the floods. My deepest sympathies to those who have lost their loved ones, properties, and those who have been forced out of their homes.
I urge citizens to comply with all directives issued by the Government and to cooperate fully with institutions mandated to address the situation.
I also urge the emergency services and all relevant authorities to do everything possible to reach those in need and assist them.
We will get through this difficult time by caring for one another.
May God bless our homeland Ghana”.
Meanwhile, emergency responders and local volunteers have rescued 15 children and an infant by boat at Tse Addo in Accra following the severe flooding on Monday, June 29.
Reports suggest that following the rising floodwaters, parts of the community were cut off, leaving residents stranded and unable to safely move.
According to eyewitnesses, emergency responders and local volunteers used boats to evacuate the affected children and the months-old baby to a safer location.
In related news, reports coming in suggest a man in his 40s has reportedly been swept away by floodwaters at Atala in Kasoa.
According to the reports, the victim, who was travelling on a motorbike, got off the bike to allow the rider to carefully cross a damaged portion of the road before getting back on, but was swept away by the floodwater.
UTV’s Prince Acquah, narrating the incident, stated, “There is a man in his 40’s who has been swept away by the floods. He was on a motorbike commuting to where he was going.
The man got off the motorbike at a point to allow the motorbike to cross the flooded area and avoid the holes in the middle of the road. His intention was to get back on the motorbike after the rider crossed; however, he was swept away by the rushing waters immediately he got off. No one was able to save him,” he narrated.
“Even eyewitnesses confirmed he couldn’t be saved. Even cars are not moving. The road is impassable at the Barrier-Kasoa stretch. As for the motor rider, he was able to cross the pits in the middle of the road. The pavement has become slippery and has resulted in several people falling in the water,” he added.
