Kwesi Botchway Jnr, a Convener of Save the Republic and member of the NPP Communications Team, has demanded that the John Mahama government immediately name the officials it says are under investigation for allegedly facilitating the movement of narcotics.

The NPP lawyer questioned why no suspensions, arrests or public disclosures have followed, arguing that Ghanaians deserve to know the names of the government officials who are under investigation for allegedly facilitating the movement of narcotics.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, Kwesi Botchway stated, “Have they been suspended? Have they been arrested? And most importantly, why has the government not named them? The minister categorically mentioned that government officials are under investigation for facilitating the shipment of narcotics to Australia.

And so why have these persons not been named? We are asking this question, and we demand answers. If the government has cleared them, they should just tell us,” he said.

He added, “It is unacceptable for government to tell parliament that some people within the system were involved in a narcotics shipment of this magnitude and then retreat behind the excuse that investigations are ongoing. Ongoing investigations cannot become a permanent hiding place for politically inconvenient information,” he added.

“We find the government’s posture in this matter particularly troubling because we live in a realm and dispensation where senior government officials such as the attorney general have developed the appetite of repeatedly announcing to the public cases that he is conducting in court and cases that he intends to conduct in court.”

“…And so what has now been the difficulty of government communicating the names of its very own officials who the government claims are under investigation for facilitating narcotic movements?”

Botchway stressed the need for equal treatment, saying that: “It is important that the Ghanaian people know you cannot have the appetite of announcing political opponents facing trial and develop the deficient appetite for not announcing government officials or your very own people involved in facilitating the transit of narcotic drugs.”

He continued: “We demand transparency. We demand fairness. We demand that the government names these people so that the Ghanaian people must know them.”

His comment comes on the heels of Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, the Interior Minister, revealing that preliminary investigations into the meth shipment from Ghana intercepted in Australia have implicated some government officials suspected.

The Interior Minister disclosed that a number of government officials are suspected of facilitating the concealment of the illicit drugs.

According to the Interior Minister, investigations are ongoing, with several officials being questioned.

He further disclosed that, with the investigation and interrogating people, a lot of things are not adding up.

Speaking before Parliament’s Committee on Assurance, the Interior Minister stated, “Even as at yesterday we were still interrogating a lot of government officials. It is not everything I can put out at this stage because we are still investigating and interrogating people. There are a lot of things that are not adding up. You could see that there is some involvement of some people within the system”.

“Even if you put all these gadgets, remember it is going to be operated by human beings. So if the wrong persons are sitting there, you can bring all the gadgets of this world; it will not be effective,” he added.

“We have changed our modus operandi and the way we place personnel. All of this is to make sure we protect our borders,” he stated.
