Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, has told President John Dramani Mahama the National Cathedral project cannot be termed as Akufo-Addo’s personal promise.
Speaking at the launch of Jefferson Sackey’s memoir in Accra on September 15, 2026, Miracles Aboagye stated, “And for me, what I find very bizarre is this consistent attempt by the president and the people in the NDC to say that the national cathedral was a personal promise by the president. It’s bizarre.
“Which of the promises he made when he was campaigning to us was made after a town hall meeting with us? When he was speaking about a 24-hour economy, did he come to you to ask whether you agreed to it or not? Was that not his promise?” he quizzed.
He continued: “So I think it’s a very sad situation that we have a president and a government deliberately peddling such conversation. Because if that analogy, if that logic is to be pursued, then which of the things the government will be doing today are things that they called a market square meeting for all of us to agree before they put out? All the things that you are pursuing today are things that you promised. Those promises are promises that you got out of your bedroom and came to tell us, you and your party people.”
“So why, in the name of God, would you deliberately demonise a national cathedral to the extent of saying that it was a personal promise to God? Every president’s promise to the people is his personal promise. It is your vision, your ambition that you present to the people, based on which the people will vote for you. And then when you get the mandate, you execute,” he noted.
“A national cathedral can never be termed as a personal promise by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. It is a national edifice. It is a monument that is going to be standing in the name of the nation Ghana,” Aboagye insisted.
Aboagye expressed optimism, saying, “And for me, I think that ultimately, their lies are catching up with them. And that is why we are seeing all this in that way. I am very hopeful that eventually the national cathedral will be built.”
The NPP man responded to comments by the President and members of the NDC that the government will not use taxpayers’ money to fund the National Cathedral project.
According to Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the land allocated for the project is already a contribution from the state, and he described the comments as an attempt to cover up what he considers their shame after allegedly misleading the public about the project.
He stated, “The cathedral was never going to be fully funded by government. It had always been a partnership between the state and the Christian community and individuals. And so even until now, a lot of people were donating. Churches, organisations, individuals were donating by short codes and what have you. And so I don’t see what is new about it”.
“If the state even says we are not putting in a pesewa, remember, the land belongs to the state. And that is the state’s own contribution to the national cathedral. So I really don’t know what the president means by the state is not going to contribute. The state has already contributed. The land itself is a contribution by the state,” he said.
He added, “This whole commentary now is just something that they are putting out to cover up their shame. The misinformation, the denigration of this national edifice that the country wanted”.
His comment follows President John Mahama, who finally stated his position on the continuation of the National Cathedral project he inherited from the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration.
According to President Mahama, even though he had made a commitment to continue projects left behind by the previous administration, the National Cathedral project was different.
Mahama explained that his commitment was to continue all national projects the previous government left behind, but the National Cathedral project was a personal pledge to God made by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and not a national project.
Speaking at a citizens’ engagement during his tour of the Upper West Region, President Mahama stated, “I made a promise that every policy and every project that I inherit, I will continue it as long as it’s in the interest of the people, and I have largely done that. Almost all the projects and policies we inherited, we have continued.
“The only one is the National Cathedral, but that was not a national policy. It was a personal pledge by the former President. It was a personal pledge by the former President to God. So that one, it wasn’t national policy,” he added.
Mahama further added, “I am a Christian myself. I have nothing against having a national cathedral”.
“My second problem was that we shouldn’t use taxpayers’ money. I mean, how many Christians are in this country? If we all pay 1,000 cedis each, we should be able to construct a national cathedral,” he added.
“My principle has always been that the location has been a problem,” he said.
“So normally during ceremonies, you have the stadium not far, and that’s the way we used to go to Black Star Square. So if you go and put this major thing there again, it will constrict that whole area,” he said.
“My problem was also that the amount of destruction we had to cause to clear the area; broke 10 judges’ residences.
“We broke the Malian Ambassador’s residence. Up to now, we’ve not replaced it. And several other properties, the old passport office, all of them were demolished to make way for a national cathedral,” he said.
