Former Manhyia North Member of Parliament Collins Amankwah has accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of pretending to be concerned about the embattled Asante Akyem North MP, Ohene Kwame Frimpong.
According to Collins Amankwah, the NDC’s public show of concern for the independent MP is merely a strategy to deceive Ghanaians.
He claimed that intelligence gathered suggests the NDC is already searching for a candidate to contest the Asante Akyem North parliamentary seat as an independent candidate, with substantial financial backing.
Collins Amankwah alleged that the move is intended to position a replacement for Ohene Kwame Frimpong should the MP remain in custody.
Speaking in a video shared on TikTok, the former MP stated, “The amount of effort I want to see from the state in rescuing the Asante Akyem North MP, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, I am not seeing it. But what the NDC, as the ruling party, is rather interested in is finding a candidate. They are embarking on a candidate search and that candidate, I understand, has been allocated huge sums of money to contest as an independent candidate in the constituency”.
“If they want to rescue Ohene Kwame Frimpong, they should demonstrate it. It should not be by mouth only. As we speak, behind the scenes, the NDC is searching for a candidate with huge financial backing, just to outwit the NPP, because everybody is aware that the Asante Akyem enclave belongs to the NPP,” he said.
Collins Amankwah added, “They are only fanfooling as if they care about the welfare of an incarcerated Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, but that is not the case.”
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong’s bail application has been thrown out by a Dutch court.
The information was made known by the Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament (MP) for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor.
The Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament (MP) for South Dayi, providing the latest update on the case, disclosed that the court first dismissed the substantive bail application of the embattled MP.
He further added that an appeal filed by the Asante Akyem North legislator was also rejected by a Dutch court.
Dafeamekpor stated, “He is still in custody. He’s still in the hands of the Dutch government in Amsterdam. We have done two applications, one substantive, one appeal for his bail, but they all got refused”.
He further disclosed that the Parliament of Ghana was preparing for the substantive hearing, where the court would determine whether the Asante Akyem North legislator should be extradited to the US to answer to the crimes he is accused of.
According to Dafeamekpor, the extradition hearing is scheduled to start on November 18, 2026.
It will be recalled that Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor had earlier disclosed that the member of parliament for Asante Akyem North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, is under investigation over alleged fraud and money laundering offences.
He further questioned the prolonged detention of Ohene Kwame Frimpong following his arrest.
According to the Majority Chief Whip, they will wait for the Asante Akyem North bail outcome before deciding on their next course of action.
