The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has stated that no Ghanaian fisherman was kidnapped off the coast of Gomoa Nyanyano/Senya Bereku in the Central Region.
According to the GAF, they have rescued 71 Ghanaian fishermen who were stranded at sea following an armed robbery off the coast.
GAF detailed that the fishermen got stranded after they were attacked by robbers who disposed of the entire fishermen’s outboard motors and personal belongings, adding that interviews with the fishermen rescued indicate that no Ghanaian fisherman was kidnapped.
In a statement on February 26, 2026, signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arihin, Acting Director General of Public Relations, read, “The Ghana Armed Forces has concluded its search and rescue operations, which started at dawn today, to locate distressed Ghanaian fishermen at sea, approximately 35 nautical miles off the coast of Gomos Nyanyano/Senya Bereku in the Central Region. The fishermen got stranded after they were attacked robbers who disposed of the entire fishermen of their outboard motors and personal belongings. Affected boats include Argentina 2, Argentina 3, Sea Lion, and Berema Nsukwa, among others.
The Ghana Navy carried out the rescue efforts together with the Ghana Air Force, supported by the local ishermen from Nyanyano/Senya Bereku general areas. Ghana Navy Special Boat Squadron with fast interceptors supported by other Ghana Navy Ships from Eastern and Western Naval Commands were key to the rescue mission, which resulted in the safe evacuation from sea of 24 and 47 of the victims to [ema and Senya Bereku respectively. Interviews with the fishermen rescued indicate that no Ghanaian fisherman has been kidnapped”.
The statement added, “Meanwhile, the Ghana Navy is continuing patrolling of Ghana’s Exclusive Economic Zone, including the area in question. The Ghana Armed Forces urges all fishermen and maritime users to exercise extreme caution and report any suspicious activity, as the situation is being assessed. It further acknowledges the massive and timely support of the Member of Parliament of the area, Gizella Tetteh Agbotui, the fisher folks and good people of the Senya Bereku, which aided the rescue efforts.
The Ghana Navy remains fully committed to protecting Ghanaian fishermen, combating piracy and armed robbery at sea, and ensuring the safety of vessels within Ghana’s Exclusive Economic Zone”.
The rescue follows earlier reports suggesting that some fishermen have been attacked at sea and left stranded after armed hijackers allegedly opened fire and made away with outboard motors.
According to the report, the incident occurred at Senya Breku in the Central Region.
Reports detailed that the victims set out to fish in the early hours of Thursday, February 26, and while reportedly returning to shore, they were attacked.
The fishermen were attacked by the assailants, who were said to be operating a black boat, and they launched the attack.
Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, speaking to the media, confirmed the incident.
According to that MP, the attackers targeted fishermen operating seven canoes.
“There was an armed attack at sea. Our fishermen usually go out at night and return early in the morning. Those who went toward the Nyanyano side were reportedly attacked.
“They were robbed of their outboard motors and generator sets by a black boat. I cannot disclose the nationality of the attackers. Investigations are ongoing,” she said.
“The military, the IGP has also dispatched a military marine police unit to help. So the navy is helping, and the marine police are also helping us,” she added.
