The Member of Parliament for Bosome-Freho and Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Nana Asafo Adjei Ayeh, has alleged that the Foreign Affairs Ministry has summoned Ghanaian evacuees from South Africa for a meeting ahead of an investigative report by JoyNews.

The NPP MP alleged the meeting could be an attempt to intimidate the evacuees into silence over questions surrounding a reported GH¢16.4 million that remains unaccounted for in the evacuation exercise.

In a statement circulating widely, Nana Asafo-Adjei questioned the timing of the meeting, noting that JoyNews was scheduled to air its investigative report at 6:00 p.m. on Monday.

He challenged the Ministry to provide answers regarding the reported financial discrepancy, arguing that if the evacuation process was handled properly, there should be no reason to avoid scrutiny.

“A reported GH¢16.4 million is still unaccounted for. The Ministry owes the public an explanation for that money, and pressuring the evacuees will not make the question go away,” he stated.

The MP also urged the evacuees to remain calm and resist any attempts to intimidate them into silence, assuring them that they should not be afraid to speak about their experiences.

He maintained that the public deserved transparency and accountability regarding the funds involved in the evacuation exercise.

“We will not let the truth be buried, and we will keep pushing for accountability,” he added.

The allegations raise further questions about the handling of the evacuation exercise and the reported GH¢16.4 million discrepancy.

However, the claims about the Ministry’s intentions and the circumstances surrounding the planned meeting remain allegations attributed to the MP.

“SOUTH AFRICAN EVACUATION SCANDAL: WHAT IS THE MINISTRY AFRAID OF?

I have received information that the Ministry has called all the South African evacuees to a meeting at the National Theatre tomorrow, Monday.

The timing is hard to ignore. JoyNews is due to air its investigative report at 6:00 p.m. Is this meeting an attempt to gag the evacuees before the revelations come out?

If everything was done properly, what is there to fear?

A reported GH¢16.4 million is still unaccounted for. The Ministry owes the public an explanation for that money, and pressuring the evacuees will not make the question go away.

To all the evacuees: stay calm. You have done nothing wrong, and you have nothing to fear. Do not allow anyone to intimidate you into silence.

We will not let the truth be buried, and we will keep pushing for accountability”.

His comment follows JOYNEWS, who are set to release an explosive report on the South African evacuation exercise.

In a post on X, JOYNEWS wrote, “How did the Ministry of Foreign Affairs arrive at the GHS49.7 million cost for the South African evacuation exercise?

The JoyNews Research team breaks down the figures, separates fact from fiction, and examines how the total was calculated.

Tune in on Monday, October 26, at 6:00 pm on JoyNews”.

Meanwhile, some Ghanaians have reacted to the yet-to-be-aired JOYNEWS report, saying, “Check the number of people blocking you because of this useless story. Are you serious at all? Let’s be serious. Instead of talking about galamsey, you are wasting our time on this”.

A netizen added, “Your work is not up to standard. What @IsaacKofiAgyei is doing is simply a poor standard of journalism. Any issue with the work should be put to the ministry and solicit their reply before going out. That’s how journalism is done in a fair and balanced society”.

A netizen added, “Data of evacuees was compiled by SA Border Management indicating the number of people who were leaving SA for Ghana and boarded the plane, before the list was sent to Ghanaian authorities.

If the list has some errors, who is supposed to be blamed? Ghana did not compile the list”.
