Alan Kyerematen, the United Party (UP) founder and leader, has disclosed that his decision to leave the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was driven by a disagreement over the party’s direction rather than a personal dispute.
According to Alan Kyerematen, the NPP over time moved away from the principles and values that originally shaped the United Party tradition from which it emerged.
He revealed that his political journey outside the NPP was therefore intended to provide an alternative platform for the values he believes should define the tradition, and also to broaden its focus to address the wider Ghanaian project.
Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV, Alan Kyerematen stated, “My very humble opinion is that they’ve completely abandoned the original ideals, the moral order, and the values of the UP tradition. But I believe in those values”.
Alan Kyerematen argued that the new UP was seeking to revive those principles while developing a political agenda that goes beyond the interests of any particular party.
He argued that political tradition should not be equated with the fortunes of individual parties, stressing that the party’s underlying values should survive even when a party associated with it departs from them.
In related news, Alan Kyerematen has claimed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost the 2024 elections by 2.1 million votes because of the propaganda targeted at him.
The former NPP man disclosed that once he declared his intention to go independent, some NPP members started circulating statements aimed at discrediting him.
According to Alan Kyerematen, the NPP propaganda backfired, as many voters who recognised his departure from the party chose not to support the NPP.
Speaking in a one-to-one interview on United Television (UTV) Ghana, Alan Kyerematen stated, “Do you know that after leaving the party and contesting as an independent candidate, 2.1 million voters didn’t vote for the NPP? And after leaving too, they kept saying, if he wants to go, he should go. I said openly to people that the time was too short to organise people to vote for me”.
“Then there was propaganda that I didn’t have people to vote for me. Their own report after losing the election said, since they said Alan Kyerematen is an independent candidate, then we will also not vote for them,” he added.
He further hinted that more revelations would be made in due course.
“There are some things that, at the appropriate time, I will disclose,” he said.
Also, Alan has said remained determined to challenge the two-party system.
He argued that more than three decades of Ghana alternating between the NPP and NDC governments had not produced the level of development Ghana could have achieved.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, Alan Kyerematen stated, “I am still determined to break the NPP and NDC duopoly, and I am even sure if I didn’t have the strength and willpower, God would have given it to me because these two parties are the cause of our problems in this country”.
“But after 34 years, our roads are bad, and we don’t have stable electricity. We’re still struggling with developmental projects. We could have done better by now,” he indicated.
Alan Kyerematen further pointed to China’s rapid transformation over roughly three decades as an example.
“It took China 30 years to become the second most powerful country in the world, but when you look at it critically, their transformation in a way makes them number one,” he said.
