Zakaria Abdulai, the embattled headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS),has sued investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni and Multimedia Group Limited for defamation, demanding GH¢2 million in damages over publications he claims damaged his reputation.

The suit, dated October 16, 2026, relates to publications the plaintiff says were broadcast in May 2023 on Multimedia Group platforms, including Joy FM, Adom FM, MyJoyOnline and Joy TV.

The programmes cited in the court documents include the Super Morning Show and its midmorning show.

According to the statement of claim, the publications accused Zakaria Abdulai of sexually harassing female students at Obuasi SHTS.

He further alleges that the defendants published claims that a female student who had suffered sexual abuse presented a pair of shorts stained with his semen to Mr Manasseh Azure Awuni.

Mr Abdulai argues that the allegations were published without sufficient evidence to support them and have harmed his reputation as an educationist, school administrator and politician.

The court action also references separate allegations reportedly made by some teachers at Obuasi SHTS in August 2026. Mr Abdulai claims a GES disciplinary body investigated those allegations and found them to be false.

He contends that the accusations nevertheless contributed to his interdiction from office following a recommendation by the Minister of Education.

According to the statement of claim, the publications portrayed him as a sexual offender and an unfit person to serve as a headmaster, damaging his professional standing, personal reputation and marriage.

Mr Abdulai is asking the court to award him GH¢2 million in special damages, alongside general damages for defamation and legal costs.

He is also seeking a perpetual injunction to prevent the defendants from making or publishing further statements about him that are allegedly defamatory.

The writ directs the defendants to enter an appearance within eight days of being served, including the day of service. It warns that failure to comply could result in judgment being entered against them in their absence.

The claims contained in the court documents represent Mr Abdulai’s position in the case and have not been established as findings of the court. The documents available for this report do not contain responses from Mr Manasseh Azure Awuni or Multimedia Group Limited to the allegations.

Meanwhile, the interdicted headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, Zakaria Abdulai, has broken his silence concerning the allegations of sexual misconduct involving female students against him.

Zakaria Abdulai, in the statement, resigned as Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Juaben Constituency and withdrew from the party’s upcoming constituency chairmanship elections.

According to the Obuasi SHTS headmaster, he pledged to pursue all lawful avenues to clear his name and return to active political engagement.

He thanked friends, relatives and well-wishers who have continued to support him, saying he intends to focus on clearing his name as investigations into the allegations proceed.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, Mr Abdulai stated, “At this time, I intend to devote my attention and resources to pursuing all lawful avenues to clear my name and vindicate my position. I remain hopeful that, once these matters are resolved, I will be able to return to active political engagement and continue contributing to the ideals and aspirations of the NDC,” he stated.

“I wish to express my profound gratitude to my friends, relatives, and all well-wishers who have stood by me and maintained their faith in my innocence in the face of the allegations levelled against me and my office,” he said.
