Otiko Djaba, a former Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, has called out Ghana’s Vice President Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, questioning her effectiveness as the highest woman in a leadership position.
According to Otiko Afisa Djaba, Prof Opoku-Agyemang has not done anything for women since she assumed the office as vice president.
Speaking on Adom FM, Otiko Afisa Djaba stated, “She is the highest woman to date in a position of leadership and decision-making. She attained this feat to be able to represent women in the country, and so, she must be able to effectively use her position to help girls and women”.
“She has to be very firm to make sure what has happened will never repeat itself. She has the right to speak to the press and issue statements, but the actions to ensure that the investigations are ongoing properly are what is needed, and she must be able to put her foot down,” Djaba added.
Otiko Afisa Djaba, speaking on the Obuasi SHTS incident, called on the Vice President to take a firmer stance to ensure the matter is properly investigated.
She added, “Nothing should be swept under the carpet. She should make sure the affected female students receive psychological support. The mental anguish of somebody touching you in a way that you know is unacceptable and a taboo must be dealt with”.
“Vice President, this is a serious call to action. Since she came to power, we haven’t seen what she has done for women. She must stand firm and make sure the female students get the needed help as well as ensure their education isn’t affected by what has happened,” she concluded.
Meanwhile, the Vice-President has finally broken her silence concerning the sexual assault case involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).
According to Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the law should take its course in the sexual assault case involving the headmaster, describing the matter as a serious national concern.
The Vice President argued that the seriousness of the allegations made it important for the legal process to be allowed to proceed without interference.
Commenting on the controversy, Professor Opoku-Agyemang, in a video shared on X, stated, “What I want to say at this point is that this is a very, very serious matter. It is a matter of concern to all of us, and it is a matter of national concern”.
“What I want to see is that we all allow the law to take its course because this is a very serious matter, especially as it affects the lives of people, not only in the present but also going into the future. So let’s allow the law to take its course,” the Vice-President added.
“We have all followed what is going on in our country regarding the case of sexual assault,” she said.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang disclosed that he will continue to monitor developments.
She added, “I want all of you to be aware that I followed this even when we were away, and I have received some reactions”.
“I’ve seen what the party did regarding this gentleman who wanted to run on our ticket. I’ve seen the letter that was written by our Secretary General,” she said.
