The Health Ministry has appealed to the doctors and nurses of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) to call off the strike in the interest of patients and Ghanaians in general.
According to the Health Ministry, the ongoing industrial action by doctors and nurses at KATH is unfortunate.
The Health Ministry disclosed that the suspension was a carefully considered administrative decision taken in the interest of accountability, patient safety, and adherence to established procedures within the health sector.
In a statement issued on Sunday, June 7, the Ministry wrote, “The Ministry acknowledges the concerns of staff and emphasises that dialogue and established dispute resolution channels remain the best path to addressing grievances.
Stakeholders must work together to ensure that grievances are addressed promptly and fairly, while safeguarding the continuous delivery of healthcare services to the public.
The action is not intended to punish efforts aimed at protecting patients. Rather, it seeks to ensure accountability, proper communication, and adherence to national. Health policies and directives.
The Ministry of Health recognises the long-standing operational challenges facing the Accident and Emergency Centre of KATH. Management has a responsibility to ensure the safety of both patients and staff. However, decisions with significant implications for emergency healthcare delivery, particularly at a major tertiary referral hospital, must follow established protocols and be coordinated with the Ministry and other relevant authorities.
It must be emphasised that since assuming office, the Minister for Health has been working tirelessly to address longstanding challenges within the health sector and improve healthcare delivery across the country”.
The Health Ministry further added, “The Ministry wishes to assure the public that the concerns raised by doctors and nurses at KA TH are receiving the urgent attention of the Minister for Health. With regard to the Sewua Hospital Project, it is important to note that work is progressing steadily, with the facility expected to be completed before the end of the year 2026
It is worthy of note that at no point has the Minister adopted an adversarial posture towards doctors or any category of health professionals. Rather, his actions and engagements have been guided by the principles of accountability, professionalism, and partnership in advancing the objectives of the health sector.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Health Service has been directed to implement immediate mitigating measures to ensure that emergency healthcare services remain accessible to the public, while we continue to engage doctors and nurses at KATH to rescind their decision and resume work.
The Ministry of Health remains committed to protecting the interests of patients while ensuring a safe and conducive working environment for all health workers.
We therefore urge all affected staff to reconsider their decision and return to work in the interest of patients and the general population”.
The development follows the brouhaha that followed Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister for Health, who has directed the Board of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) to suspend the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Paa Kwesi Baidoo, for two weeks with immediate effect.
In a letter dated June 5, 2026, the Health Minister asserted that the decision follows the KATH CEO temporary suspension of emergency admissions at the facility.
The Health Minister highlighted that the action was taken in contravention of directives issued by President John Dramani Mahama.
He disclosed that the meeting involving the Ministry’s Chief Director, Technical Advisor and Legal Advisor concluded that the CEO’s actions were inconsistent with the President’s directives.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has joined the strike action by the Doctors at KATH.
