A shocking development unravelled at the Public Accounts Committee sitting on May 5, 2026, following an official of Mfantsiman Girls’ Senior High School who disclosed that staff were paying GH¢30 as rent for two-bedroom bungalows.

In a viral video, Ranking Member of the Public Accounts Committee, Hon. Samuel Atta Mills, visibly surprised, labelled the development as a complete ‘disgrace’.

According to Samuel Atta Mills, the amount is woefully inadequate to cover even the periodic maintenance costs of the facilities.

In the viral video, the Ranking Member of the Public Accounts Committee questioned an official of Mfantsiman Girls’ Senior High School over how much staff pay as rent for two-bedroom bungalows.

He asked, “How much do they pay for a bungalow at Mfantsiman in Saltpond?”

The official of Mfantsiman Girls’ Senior High School disclosed staff of the school pays GH¢30 as rent for occupying the bungalows.

“Saltpond is GH¢30. What a disgrace. Mr Chairman, for the residential rent, we are supposed to recover a total of GH¢3,666. The rent is GH¢30 for two bedrooms. It was just a way of motivating staff,” Samuel Atta Mills responded.

Samuel Atta Mills further quizzed, “What a disgrace. How much are you supposed to collect? Sir, what you collect is not enough to even renovate the place. All these bungalows are like pig pens.

“Have you heard about people paying 10% of their salaries towards rent? Or at the time the ministry introduced that policy, were you not born? Or did you never try to find out?” he said.

Some Ghanaians reacting to the development stated, “By now he dey take the rest into his personal account. Audit this guy and audit the tenants, too. I bet they’ll trace another source of money from the tenants into his personal account. Uproot these old, corrupt goons and give us the job, let’s work for our country”.

A netizen added, “At this rate, even minor repairs become a problem, and the burden quietly shifts back to the state. It raises a bigger question: is this support, or just a system that hasn’t been updated in years?”

One X user added, “The chairman should know that the salaries and other conditions of service are very poor and so charging market prices for bungalows is not only insensitive but very demoralizing”.

Another Ghanaian wrote, “See, I think it’s better they stop and save taxpayers’ money on these so-called Public Accounts Committee hearings because we’ve had enough. This whole show only exposes how our leaders keep driving the country into a ditch through corruption, yet they still walk free. So …!!?”

One X user suggested, “These policies were designed decades ago when GH¢30 actually meant something.

No one updates them because increasing rent for teachers is politically risky”.

“Na if you dey rent kiosk for Spintex safe ebi how much herh Ghana”, one X user added.
