Elvis Adu-Ameyaw, the lawyer, the embattled Asante Akyem North MP, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, has revealed there are not many details surrounding his client’s arrest.
According to the Asante Akyem North Lawyer, to the best of his knowledge, a bench warrant has been issued by the United States.
He further detailed that he cannot go into details surrounding the charges levelled against his client.
Speaking in an interview on Salt FM on May 14, 2026, Elvis Adu-Ameyaw, lawyer for the Asante Akyem North, stated, “For now, there are not many details regarding the reason for his arrest, but to the best of my knowledge, a bench warrant has been issued by the United States. Per my understanding, he is wanted in Illinois. However, regarding the detailed charges levelled against him, I cannot go into that.
“To the best of my knowledge, these proceedings can sometimes take up to a month. If, after everything, he is found guilty, then he will be extradited to the US. But if he is not found guilty, he will regain his freedom,” he said.
Meanwhile, sources familiar with the arrest of the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, have shared details concerning the arrest at the Schiphol Airport.
Reports suggest that the Asante Akyem North MP was dramatically arrested by Dutch security officials at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam shortly after a KLM flight from Accra landed in the Netherlands.
According to CitiNewsroom, “the lawmaker departed Kotoka International Airport in Accra on Saturday, May 9, aboard KLM Flight 590. The flight reportedly left Ghana through Gate C7 at about 10:10 p.m. and arrived at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam at approximately 4:36 GMT on Sunday”.
The information gathered from sources detailed that the incident happened moments after the aircraft touched down at Gate F3 when passengers were prepared to disembark, the pilot announced that all passengers should remain seated for what was described as a security check.
Sources revealed that a team of Dutch security officials subsequently boarded the aircraft and proceeded directly to the Business Class section where the Asante Akyem North MP was seated with another senior government official travelling on the same flight.
The Dutch security officials reportedly identified the MP, read him his rights, and placed him in handcuffs before escorting him off the aircraft into a waiting security van.
Also, the parliament of Ghana has confirmed that the member of parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, has been detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
According to the Parliamentary leadership, they are engaging Ghana’s mission in The Hague for further details, with more information expected in due course.
In a statement issued by the Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, which was shared on the official social media handles of the House.
The statement asserted that Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has been informed of the matter.
The statement read, “It has come to the attention of Parliament that the Hon Member for Asante Akyem North Constituency, Mr Kwame Ohene Frimpong, has been detained at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam, in the Netherlands.
“The Rt Hon Speaker and the leadership of the House are in touch with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague for detailed information on the matter. The public will be duly informed appropriately on this matter,” the statement read.
