Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has dismissed claims that the executive arm of government controls his actions.
According to Speaker Bagbin, no executive can control me.
He stressed that no executive authority can dictate his conduct or decisions.
Speaking on the floor of parliament, Alban Bagbin boldly stated, “The statement you just made is a very serious statement. As I sit here, there’s no executive that can control me”.
Speaker Bagbin made these remarks following Asante-Akim Central Member of Parliament Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, who, during the debate on the Appointments Committee’s report on Chief Justice nominee Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, claimed that the executive was exerting undue influence over both the legislature and the judiciary.
He added that such interference was among the reasons the Minority walked out during the vetting of Chief Justice nominee Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie.
Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi also argued that ongoing court cases challenging the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo made it unacceptable for Parliament to proceed with the vetting.
Meanwhile, Parliament has approved the nomination of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the new Chief Justice of Ghana.
This follows heated vetting and debate on the Appointments Committee’s report.
During the approval process in parliament, the minority rejected the voice vote and demanded a head count, which ended with the Majority recording 169 members while the Minority recorded 63 members.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie is now expected to be sworn into office by President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House in the coming days.
