“Things like these didn’t happen under my watch” – Nitiwul on El-Wak tragedy

News“Things like these didn’t happen under my watch” – Nitiwul on El-Wak tragedy

Dominic Nitiwul, a former Minister for Defence and Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, has weighed in on the El-Wak tragedy during the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.

According to Dominic Nitiwul, God being gracious to him, the El-Wak tragedy didn’t happen when he was the Minister for Defence under the Akufo-Addo government.

Nitiwul is quoted by GHOne to have said, “God being graceful to me, things like these didn’t happen under my watch”.

However, netizens have fired shots at the former Defence Minister following his remark. A netizen stated, “Idiot! This was the guy who decided not to ever do an open recruitment and thus decided to pick only party folks behind the scenes! He’s the reason we are experiencing this!”.

“Which people brought us here in the first place by leaving youth behind without employment for the past 8yrs”, another netizen added.

An X user added, “Akoa y3 kwasia… I hope he’s investigated for the missing ammunition and how an exiled Bawku chief allegedly found his way back into the town, fueling tensions last year”.

Some netizens also dragged Laadi Ayii Ayamba, the Member of Parliament for Pusiga, who has claimed the El-Wak tragedy during the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, was beyond human control.

According to the Pusiga MP, yesterday was the day the Almighty Allah had ordained for them to die.

Speaking on the Floor of Parliament, Laadi Ayii Ayamba said, “There is nothing that happens that doesn’t happen at the right time. This is what the Almighty Allah has ordained for them. Today is their day. No matter how, no matter what, no matter who was there, as what.”

She added, “Even if we brought all the presidents of the world to sit there as ministers or whatsoever, once today is ordained for them to die, they will. And this is what has happened. Unless you don’t believe in the oneness of God, unless you don’t believe in the oneness of the Almighty Allah, it is not anybody. It is not anybody.”

Ayamba further clarified, “Who wanted them to die? There is no single officer there who wanted even one single soul to pass.”

Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed six people have died in the ongoing military recruitment at the El-Wak Stadium.

Reports suggest the chaos occurred around 6:20 a.m. when applicants breached security protocols.

According to GAF, 28 people were taken to the 37 Military Hospital.

They further revealed that six people have died, with five in the ICU and another 12 in critical condition.

The information gathered suggests the six died as a result of a stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.

According to reports, thousands of young Ghanaians thronged the El-Wak stadium in a desperate bid to secure enlistment into the Ghana military.

The chaos occurred following the large crowd jostling at the entry points, resulting in a stampede that led to multiple injuries and fatalities.

The information gathered suggests the bodies of the six deceased have been deposited at the 37 Military Hospital morgue.

Several other potential military recruits are receiving emergency treatment at the facility’s casualty ward.
