“This is assault, it is criminal” – Mahama reacts to video of students assaulting a teacher

News“This is assault, it is criminal” – Mahama reacts to video of students assaulting a teacher

President John Dramani Mahama has condemned a viral video which captured some students attacking a teacher.

Mahama condemned the recent attacks on teachers as he expressed concerns over the handling of students who attack their teachers.

It will be recalled that last year October 2025, a viral video captured students reportedly attacking the teacher after he refused to allow them to cheat in exams.

Reports later surfaced that the parents of the students reached an out-of-court settlement with the teacher.

Speaking at the Delegates Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), President Mahama stated, “Indeed, I saw the video of the Maths teacher being beaten because he refused to allow our students to cheat, and they had a sense of entitlement.

“How is that? This is assault. It is criminal. But when we inquired, the police also said the teacher was compensated, so he didn’t want to press charges anymore”.

At least the children should have been booked, they should have been taken through the legal process, and at least if nothing at all, they should have been bonded to be of good behavior for a period of time, and then we will believe that justice has been done. As for assault on teachers, I am with you 100%, we will deal with it,” he stated.

Also, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has condemned attacks on its members.

GNAT declared a zero-tolerance stance following the killing of Mr Yahaya Bukari who was the headteacher of Garu G/A Primary School.

GNAT President Rev. Isaac Owusu, speaking at the Association’s National Delegates Conference on Monday, stated, “Your Excellency, the late Yahya Bukari was a teacher and a GNAT member who also served as the district treasurer for the good people of Garu.

“He was shot dead in the line of duty. But for his intervention, a number of school children could have lost their lives. Yet, until today, we have not heard any response from the employer,” Rev. Owusu said.

He added, “Your Excellency, we, the largest teacher union in the country, are speaking on behalf of every single teacher in Ghana. For the year 2026, we are declaring zero tolerance for teacher assaults and brutality”.

“Your Excellency, we demand an immediate review of the Single Spine Pay Policy within this year is necessary to reflect your government’s resetting agenda. We are resetting Ghana, and the pay policy must reflect this vision.. A well-motivated teacher, Your Excellency, is more motivated, and this directly translates into better learning outcomes for our students,” he added.
