One person has been confirmed dead, with another injured in a tragic accident at the Takoradi–Cape Coast road expansion site.
According to reports, two mechanics were working on a faulty bulldozer when the tragic accident occurred.
The faulty bulldozer is said to belong to XNL Construction Company.
The reports suggest the machine reportedly moved unexpectedly, injuring a worker and leading to the death of one mechanic at the scene.
In the post shared by SIKAOFFICIAL, he stated, “A tragic accident has occurred at the Takoradi–Cape Coast road expansion site, where two mechanics were working on a faulty bulldozer belonging to XNL Construction Company.
The machine reportedly moved unexpectedly due to a mechanical fault, running over the workers. One mechanic died at the scene, while the other sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment in hospital”.
Some Ghanaians reacting to the tragic news stated, “This is heartbreaking. People leave home just to earn an honest living and never make it back. Safety can’t be an afterthought on these sites. One life lost is too many. My thoughts are with the family and the injured worker”.
“Isolating the equipment ie. turning off the engine (if not needed for repair purposes) and putting a chock before going under it to work, is very necessary”, a netizen added.
One X user stated, “One of the things basically ignored about most construction companies is prioritising safety. A thorough risk assessment, well-trained mechanics, and robust supervision in place would have somehow saved this incident from happening. I feel so bad when I see such cases”
“Oh! Men went out to work to bring money home, and this is how it has ended. So help them God. May his soul rest in peace”, another Ghanaian wrote.
Meanwhile, last year, President Mahama cut sod for the dualisation of the 73.6-kilometre Cape Coast–Takoradi road under the Big Push.
The project is expected to be completed in two years, which will feature nine interchanges, 10 bridges, 15 footbridges, and 20 kilometres of service roads, along with rest stops and axle load stations to improve safety and traffic flow.
“Construction works have been divided into three lots, with three contractors assigned as follows:
Lot 1: Cape Coast to Kissi
Lot 2: Kissi to Daboase
Lot 3: Daboase to Takoradi Airport Roundabout”
