Commercial transport operators have threatened to suspend services nationwide on November 1, when the Traffitech-GH system is scheduled to become operational.

The operators, led by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, say they will direct their members to park their vehicles if the authorities proceed with the rollout without addressing their concerns.

According to the groups, their leadership had resolved to direct drivers across the country to park their vehicles and suspend operations once Traffitech-GH became operational on November 1.

“We will not operate under an unfair and unjust system. You cannot digitalise illegality,” they declared.

They also appealed to commuters to take notice of the planned action and make alternative transport arrangements from Sunday.

“The government will be fully responsible for any inconvenience this action will cause,” the statement added.

According to the transport operators, the Mahama government is seeking to use the planned rollout of the Traffitech-GH system to extort money from drivers through traffic fines.

They argue that it is unfair for the government to subject drivers to camera-based traffic enforcement when the authorities have failed to clear the spaces they are legally expected to use for picking up and dropping off passengers.

The Commercial transport operators consequently threatened to suspend public transport services nationwide from Sunday, November 1, when Traffitech-GH is scheduled to become operational, unless their concerns are addressed.

In a statement dated October 31 by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, operating under the Joint Transport Front, the ultimatum was issued.

The Commercial transport operators’ statement was signed by Samuel Amoah, National Deputy Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU of TUC; Asonaba Nana Owiredu, National Chairman of the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana; Paa Willie, National Chairman of the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana; David Agboado, National PRO of the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana; and Yaw Barimah, National PRO of the Commercial Transport Operators/True Drivers Union.

According to the groups, they had earlier given the government and the Ghana Police Service until October 20 to enforce Regulation 142 of L.I. 2519 by removing traders from bus stops and pedestrian walkways before the introduction of the new traffic enforcement system.

They, however, claim that the deadline had passed without any meaningful action by the government, the Ministry of Local Government or the police.

“This shows clearly that the government wants to use TRAFFITECH-GH to extort money from innocent drivers while leaving traders to take over our legally designated spaces,” the statement said.

“We cannot allow our drivers to be fined and harassed by cameras for offences created by the government’s own failure to clear the roads,” the groups stated.

They argued that the authorities must first address the alleged encroachment on bus stops and pedestrian walkways before enforcing the new system against commercial drivers.

“We will not operate under an unfair and unjust system. You cannot digitalise illegality,” they declared.

“The government will be fully responsible for any inconvenience this action will cause,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Alexander Kwaku Obeng, the Director of Education, Research and Training at the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), has disclosed that the introduction of the TraffiTech-GH initiative and the issuance of caution notices to drivers have contributed to improved road-use behaviour.

According to him, the Police have observed positive changes in driver conduct, supported by data gathered since the technology-driven traffic enforcement.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, ACP Alexander Kwaku Obeng stated, “With this strategy of embedding some of these cameras in vehicles running our roads all over and having some that are tripod-mounted that are also able to move from one end to the other, we have seen a very positive impact on the behaviour of motorists in the first place”.

“Within twenty days of September this year, when we enhanced sensitisation, gathering evidence and confronting vehicle owners with it, with an embedded message with GPS, MTTD sender ID sending messages saying speed kills, reduce it now with your vehicle number, time and place of the offence; if you compare the data of crashes from September last year (2025) with the same period this year, we have seen a significant change in behaviour of drivers,” he disclosed.

“Crises reported to the Ghana Police Service across our twenty-five police regions in Ghana in the last year amounted to 1,108. Now we have recorded 1,003, a reduction of 9.4%.”

“Vehicles that were involved in these crashes last year were 1,928, and we have seen a significant reduction of 12.19%; that is, 1,693. In terms of morbidity, we have seen last year’s record of 1,405 persons, both male and female, getting injured; we have seen a significant reduction of 15.02% to 1,194,” he added.

The Traffitech-GH is an automated system developed by the Ghana Police Service to enforce road traffic laws and regulations and improve road safety.

It seeks to increase compliance with road traffic laws and regulations to reduce road traffic crashes, deaths and injuries.
