The North Industrial area fire in the early hours of Thursday, October 1, 2026, has reportedly claimed the lives of two people.
Reports suggest the fire swept through the North Industrial Area branch of Duraplast Ghana in Accra.
According to citinews, among those feared dead is a two-week-old baby.
However, the identities of the victims and the circumstances surrounding their deaths had not been officially confirmed.
Eyewitness reports alleged that the fire was triggered by an exploding gas cylinder.
The fire occurred within the industrial enclave, where thick smoke and flames were seen emerging from the affected area.
An eyewitness named Mohammed revealed that a woman had been cooking for her children before leaving the gas cylinder in the care of one of them.
The eyewitness alleged that the child subsequently increased the gas, causing the cylinder to explode, which triggered the fire.
“Some woman was cooking for her children, and she went out, and one of the children increased it, and then the cylinder exploded,” the eyewitness stated.
The North Industrial Area fire reportedly spread rapidly as thick smoke engulfed the surrounding area.
Meanwhile, authorities are expected to investigate the incident to determine what caused the fire and establish the full extent of the casualties.
Also, Duraplast has disclosed they have lost its entire stock of pipes after an early-morning fire gutted a warehouse.
Speaking to the media after the fire broke out, Marketing Manager, Emmanuel Donkor stated, “I got to the office about 6: 45, and then I was told that there was a fire at the annex. So some colleagues and I came here, and then we called the fire service. They told us they were on their way.”
“First, about two fire tenders came; they couldn’t control the fire. If they had come 30 minutes or 20 minutes before, we could have just stopped the fire there and then,” he said.
“But all our hydrants (at duraplast) were also empty,” he said.
“So what we did was to call Ghana Water. I spoke to the regional engineer, and he spoke to the district engineer,” Mr Donkor said.
He further added, “The challenge currently here is the illegal structures here; that is where the fire started from. It started from the illegal structures just behind our wall”.
“What we did was to get our forklift to start removing the pipes. The pipes are products of petrol, so most of them easily got burnt.”
When asked about the extent of the damage, he stated, “Enormous, all our stock. Our pipes stock is gone. All our pipes have been destroyed.”
