Dome Kwabenya NPP delegates queue overnight

Some delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Dome Kwabenya Constituency, as early as 11:00 PM on Friday, were already queued at the Dome Kwabenya Football Park.

The NPP presidential primaries officially commence at 7:00 AM today, but the NPP delegates were queued about eight hours ahead of time.

Despite the cold night breeze, the NPP delegates stayed overnight to vote for their preferred candidate.

One delegate speaking to the media stated, “I came around 11 PM. We are determined to select a candidate who can lead us to victory in 2028”.

211,849 registered NPP delegates across 16 regions of the country are voting in the keenly anticipated NPP presidential primaries.

NPP delegates from all 16 regions, and all 275 constituencies, grassroots organisers, constituency executives, and Members of Parliament are expected to vote.

Over 900 voting centres have been set up for the exercise, with voting ending at  3:00 PM, after which counting will commence immediately.

Also, a central collation centre has been established in Accra, where all certified results from each of the 275 constituencies will be transmitted for final certification and declaration.

The former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Abetifi MP, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Bosomtwe MP, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong, are the five contesting to become the NPP flagbearer for the 2028 election.

Meanwhile, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has declared that the Ghana Police Service is fully prepared to provide security ahead of the NPP primaries.

According to the IGP, the NPP had formally written to the police informing them that security for the elections would be handled by the Ghana Police Service alone.

Speaking at a peace pact signing ceremony involving NPP presidential aspirants, the IGP stated, “Some few weeks ago, the NPP party wrote to the police to inform us that the security for the forthcoming presidential elections will be solely handled by the Ghana Police Service”.

“We want to assure you that we have been able to identify all the areas where the elections will take place. We have 276 plus one polling centres. We have been able to make our operational plans”.

“We have met all our regional commanders who are responsible for these areas where these elections will take place. We have gone over all the preparations over and over and are ready to go to the field,” the IGP noted.

He added, “We assure you that at least 70 is the least number of police that will be at each polling station. We have deployed heavily. All senior officers countrywide are going to be at the police station”.

“We have the inner deployment, the middle deployment, and then the outer deployment. The outer deployment is heavily loaded,” he explained.

“I want to assure you that we have done a lot of training and preparation and that my regional commanders have called me and said that they are even ready for the election today,” Mr Yohuno added.
