The former Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Adwoa Safo, has quizzed critics of the former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, accusing him of the poor management of Ghana’s economy under the Akufo-Addo government.
Speaking to NPP delegates, a highly vociferous Adwoa Safo questioned Dr Bawumia’s critics whether he was the Finance Minister.
According to Adwoa Safo, when some NPP members of parliament called for the removal of Ken Ofori-Atta as Finance Minister, over his poor management of the economy, was he not allowed to destroy the economy before stepping down?
The former Gender Minister quizzed critics on why they blame Dr Mahamudu Bawumia when he was not the Finance Minister.
Adwoa Safo, speaking to NPP delegates, stated, “Was Dr Mahamudu Bawumia the Finance Minister? We were in government when some of our MPs questioned how the economy was being managed and called for the removal of our Finance Minister. Did they allow him to step aside? Didn’t he destroy the economy before he was sent home? So why blame Dr Bawumia?”.
Adwoa Safo further declared Dr Bawumia was not the cause of the NPP’s 2024 election defeat, arguing that Ghanaians despise the NPP because when they spoke, they were not listening.
She added, “If you are a mate and your master is driving a car, can you overrule the driver, even if the driver is not performing well? We did our thing badly. When people spoke, we didn’t listen; we even placed our hands in pensioners’ funds. There are a lot of things that caused the 2024 elections’ defeat; it is not one individual. Dr Bawumia did not cause the NPP defeat; Ghanaians despise us because when they spoke, we were not listening”.
Some netizens reacting to Adwoa Safo’s remarks wrote, “So she just admitted the fact that the previous government failed the people of Ghana. Who was in charge of the economy?”.
“So the NPP knows the truth? Why are some still pretending? I throw a hat to Adwoa Sarfo. However, she should know we’re not willing to forgive NPP for the harm it caused us. They will pay for it by keeping them in opposition for decades”, a netizen added.
A netizen added, “Was Dr Bawumia just a bystander for 8 years? As Vice President & head of the Economic Management Team, collective responsibility applies. You can’t take credit for “digitalisation” & dodge blame for economic collapse. Sometimes I wonder where y’all got your qualification from”
“The NPP party nu, Ebi 2 anaaah? Do we have Nana Addo’s NPP and Bawumia’s NPP? Instead of apologising and begging Ghanaians for a change of heart, nu they are rather blaming Nana Addo, forgetting Bawumia was his vice and head of economic management, whatever. Nyame p3”, an X user added.
Additionally one more netizen wrote, “He was just a mate, but he kept telling us the engine was good, the tyres were in fine shape, and the shock absorbers were perfect. When the finance minister was quiet, he was all over, even to the extent of saying he arrested the dollar and gave it to the IGP for detention”.
“Bawumia said when the fundamentals are weak, the exchange rate will expose you… Wasn’t he in charge of the economic reform team? Why will I only blame the finance minister… finance minister & vice president who get more power? If the position is useless, put me up there next”, a netizen added.
One last Ghanaian added, “Ken Ofori-Atta is the reason why disgruntled Ghanaians will never forgive Akuffo-Addo. Never! Even when his own people wanted him out, he still saw the need to keep him despite his incompetence. Coupled with the litany of scandals he ignored. Worst president in Ghana’s history”.
