A viral video has emerged of members of the Majority Caucus of Parliament backing Hajia Amina Adam, the widow of the late Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso East, before the NDC just ended primary elections.

In the viral video, some members of the Majority Caucus openly declared their support for Hajia Amina Adam when they visited her at her home.

The MPs were heard assuring Hajia Adam that she was going to win the primaries.

One of the MP Isaac Ashai Odamtten, was heard boldly saying, “We are waiting for her in this 9th Parliament, we are waiting for her.”

“Insha Allah, she is coming,” a voice also stated.

However, Baba Jamal secured 431 votes, defeating Hajia Amina Adam, who polled 399 votes. Mohammed Ramne obtained 88 votes, Dr Yakubu Azimdow garnered 45 votes, and Najib Sani received one vote.

The Majority Caucus in Parliament then called for the immediate cancellation of the just-ended Ayawaso East Constituency parliamentary primaries following viral videos of vote-buying claims.

Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, in a statement issued on Sunday, February 8, 2026, demanded the immediate cancellation of the primary and the disqualification of candidates found to have engaged in vote buying.

According to the Majority leader’s statement, any candidate found to have engaged in the alleged unethical conduct must be disqualified.

He further reaffirms the Majority’s commitment to restoring integrity in Ghana’s politics.

However, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has cleared Baba Jamal of his vote-buying allegations during the party’s parliamentary primary held on Saturday, February 7.

According to the NDC, they are unable to annul the Ayawaso East parliamentary primary, as several constraints block the annulment of the primary.

He further cited that the Electoral Commission is expected to close nominations for the by-election on Wednesday, February 11, which leaves the NDC no room to restart the process.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, February 10, the NDC’s General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey, stated, “The committee’s report is that ideally, we should have annulment of the primary. However, the committee acknowledges that there are real obstacles that make it difficult for us to do that. The party’s constitution doesn’t have a provision for annulment of the election.

“We are time-bound because we need to present a candidate to the EC on February 11, and there are legal challenges that could be mounted by whoever won. In light of that, the party has taken the recommendations, and we have no option but to present Baba Jamal as our candidate,” he said.

He added, “We’re going to do a comprehensive review of the whole process that led to our internal elections. We’re expanding the committee by adding four more members, to make it a 7-member committee, so that they come out with recommendations to deal with this inappropriate canker as far as the elections are concerned”.

Baba Jamal has since drawn number one on the ballot paper ahead of the Ayawaso East by-election.
