Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has challenged party members questioning his praise for Ghanaian business mogul Ibrahim Mahama, insisting that nobody can dictate whom he should commend.

According to Abronye, he sees no reason to withdraw his support for Ibrahim Mahama, arguing that the businessman has demonstrated commitment to helping Ghanaians and contributing to the country’s economy.

Speaking on his Ohia TV programme, Abronye alleged that some party members had been pressuring him to defend foreign companies, particularly in the mining sector, instead of recognising the contributions of Ibrahim Mahama.

The NPP chairman questioned why he should be expected to praise foreign mining companies while overlooking a Ghanaian businessman whose early business dealings, he claimed, included contracts secured during the NPP administration.

Abronye also highlighted  Ibrahim Mahama’s assistance to Ghanaians who were stranded in South Africa as an example of the businessman’s support for fellow citizens.

He stated, “These small boys think that when they see GH¢1000, they have seen money. If you don’t know, Ibrahim Mahama started his business when the NPP was in power and most of the contracts he initially secured were from the NPP government.

When Ghanaians were stranded in South Africa, Ibrahim Mahama helped them. So, you NPP person, why would you come and tell me to praise foreign companies and leave Ibrahim Mahama? Who born dog?” Abronye said.

Abronye maintained that his position was informed by what he considers Ibrahim Mahama’s contributions to Ghana and its people, rather than political considerations.

The development follows Abronye DC, has shockingly made a case for businessman Ibrahim Mahama and his company, Engineers & Planners (E&P).

According to Abronye, Ibrahim Mahama’s Engineers & Planners (E&P) has done better for Damang than Newmont in their 22 years of operation.

He argued that the developmental impact of E&P at Damang surpasses what foreign-owned mining companies have achieved in their respective operational areas over several decades.

Abronye, in his commentary, singled out Newmont’s operations in Ahafo, highlighting that the development associated with E&P at Damang exceeds what Newmont has delivered to its host communities over approximately 20 years.

Speaking on Ohia TV in a video shared on X, Abronye stated, “If we’re to be truthful, the Damang that we made so much noise about; Ibrahim Mahama, the report coming in shows that Ibrahim Mahama has done better for Damang in terms of development than Newmont has done for Kenyasi in their twenty-two years of operation”

Abronye further highlighted that Ghana stands to benefit more from entrusting its gold resources to capable indigenous entrepreneurs such as Ibrahim Mahama than from relying predominantly on multinational mining companies.

According to Abronye, Ghanaian ownership could promote greater local investment, employment creation, infrastructure development and retention of mineral wealth within the national economy.

Abronye’s shocking endorsement is particularly significant given his history of political opposition to Ibrahim Mahama’s mining interests.

It will be recalled that in 2017, the concession involving Exton Cubic Group Limited, which had engaged Engineers & Planners, became the subject of intense political and legal controversy.

The NPP Bono regional chairman was among those who publicly challenged the arrangement.
