According to the Methodist Bishop, the Mahama government should not rely on the shortcomings of previous administrations to explain current challenges.

He argued that voters elected it to provide a new direction based on the promises it made during the election campaign.

The Methodist Bishop argued that if Ghanaians liked what they saw under the NPP government, they would not have voted them out.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the 52nd Conference of the Methodist Church Ghana at St Paul Cathedral in Tema on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, Most Rev Prof Johnson Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu stated, “If we liked what we saw, we wouldn’t have voted them out. So, there’s no point in making any reference. You promised that you would do new things, so we expect that that will be done”.

He further highlighted the role of the Church in supporting government efforts to address social and economic challenges, particularly youth unemployment.

He cited the Church’s entrepreneurship programme, which supports young people with funding, workspace, capital, tools and other resources to establish and sustain businesses.

According to the Methodist Bishop, although governments often make commitments to create jobs for young people, the state cannot meet every need on its own.

“The government promises a lot. If you follow the politics of the last few years, for example, the government promised to give employment to a lot of young people. I am sure the government does, but it can’t do everything. And that’s where the Church comes in,” he said.

In related news, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the ranking member of Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee, has accused the John Mahama-led NDC of abandoning its major promises to Ghanaians.

Oppong Nkrumah challenged the NDC government to account for the broader set of promises it made.

According to Oppong Nkrumah, the government appears to have shifted its focus towards a few areas it can showcase.

He argued that the NDC government’s performance should instead be measured against the specific targets it set for itself in its 2025 and 2026 economic programmes.

Speaking on Citi Fm’s Eyewitness News, Oppong Nkrumah stated, “There are only about three games in town. Everything else that they listed, literally they have abandoned it”.

“You were here when they said we were going to build 600 CHPS compounds in the first year, and now they said they were going to do about 35 Agenda 111s,” he said.

“In sports, they said we’re going to build about seven stadia in, I think, the first or second year,” he said.

“The major outcomes that they listed, they’ve literally abandoned all of them,” he said.

Oppong Nkrumah also linked the situation partly to the government’s fiscal strategy.

He argued that revenue mobilisation had not grown strongly enough to match the size and demands of the economy, adding that the limited fiscal space has made it difficult for the government to pursue the wide range of programmes it initially promised,

“We have a theory of why they have abandoned all of those and are just clinging onto about two or three things as evidence that their government is performing,” he said.
