Bright Simons, the Vice President of Policy Think Tank IMANI Africa, has warned the John Mahama government that it will lose massive goodwill if you try to backpedal on their earlier position on the National Cathedral.

In a social media post on X, Bright Simons warned the ruling NDC government not to underestimate the scale of disappointment if it tries to backpedal on the position that tax money cannot be used for a new “national cathedral”.

He warned the NDC government it will lose massive goodwill from a significant number of middle-class voters should it backpedal on their earlier position.

Bright Simons, in a post, stated, “This whole thing is becoming ridiculous!

The Ruling Party should not underestimate the scale of disappointment if it tries to backpedal on the position that tax money cannot be used for a new “national cathedral”.

It will lose massive goodwill from a significant number of middle-class voters.

Unfortunately, it will not gain the equivalent number of votes from supporters of the national cathedral.

 Those supporters have loyalties to those who initiated the program and will not be appeased by a cynical turnaround.

So, any backpedalling is NET NEGATIVE for the ruling party. It will bleed substantial goodwill.

The total lack of decisiveness comes across as serious disorganisation at the highest levels of the ruling party.

The government has had almost two years to translate a clear policy stance it took ahead of a major election into action:

a) no tax money, &

b) The Christian Community should raise their own money and build their own cathedral and bible museum.

The government should simply DECIDE whether the same land as before will be handed over to the Christian leadership or a new plot of land will be allocated.

Why should such a decision take nearly two years?

The decision of not funding the cathedral with taxmoney is sound.

 The Christian churches are rich enough to fund it.

And since the supporters of the Cathedral claim that the building will generate returns to pay for itself, they should not have any difficulty raising funds to build it.

Regarding the $97m or so of public money spent already, why has the government refused to publish the forensic audit?

His comment follows, Mustapha Gbande, the Deputy General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), has said the party must apologise to the Akufo-Addo government if its allegations over the financing and management of the National Cathedral project are found to be wrong.

According to Gbande, the NDC has a responsibility to establish the truth behind claims it made while in opposition before supporting any move to rebuild the stalled National Cathedral project.

In a Facebook post, Gbande wrote, “If we were wrong, we must first collectively apologise to the NPP and the previous government”.

Mustapha Gbande added that he would welcome a monument built in Ghana “to the glory of God”; he, however, insisted that the NDC must uphold accountability and avoid double standards.

His post added, “I so much believe the NDC as a party will stay completely from this conversation of a national cathedral … without a complete and proper investigation”.

“At this point, the investigation is more important to the people of Ghana, angels from heaven and God himself than reconstruction and committees,” he said.

“Politics without boundaries, limits and principles is a dangerous arena,” he said.
