The Tema Regional Police Command of the Ghana Police Service has announced that they have intercepted 2,213 slabs of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
The Police statement disclosed that the suspect Indian hemp was intercepted aboard an outboard-powered wooden canoe on the River Volta at Tuanikopey Island.
According to the Police, the interception was carried out by the Marine Police Detachment at Ada at about 12:45 am on Thursday, September 17, 2026, during a routine patrol.
In a statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs, ASP Dede Dzakpasu, read, “The Tema Regional Police Command, through the Marine Police Detachment at Ada, has intercepted an outboard-powered wooden canoe containing twenty-nine (29) sacks of dried leaf substances suspected to be Indian Hemp on the River Volta at Tuanikopey Island.
The interception occurred on Thursday, 17th September 2026, at about 12:45 a.m., during a routine patrol. The occupants of the canoe, upon sighting the Police, abandoned the canoe and fled. A search revealed twenty-nine (29) sacks containing 2,2 13 slabs of dried leaves wrapped in yellow cellotape.
Also found in the canoe were fourteen (14) 25-litre gallons, twelve (12) of which contained pre- mixed fuel. and two (2) Yamaha outboard motors, one 40HP and the other 30HP. The suspected narcotic substances have been conveyed to the Ada District Police Headquarters, while arrangements are underway to convey the outboard motors and pre-mixed fuel to the station for further investigation,
The Tema Regional Police Command is making efforts to identify and apprehend the persons who abandoned the canoe and its contents.
The Command cautions the public against engaging in the trafficking and transportation of narcotic substances and advises anyone with information on the owners or occupants of the abandoned canoe to report to the nearest Police station or provide such information to the Police to assist in the ongoing investigation”.
In related news, President John Dramani Mahama has established an inter-agency task force to tackle narcotics trafficking through Ghana’s ports and other borders.
Mahama’s decision comes after being briefed that 10 people, including four Customs officers, are currently in custody over recent drug cases.
President Mahama on Thursday, September 17, 2026, chaired a meeting with security chiefs where he received an update on investigations into the trafficking of narcotics.
Presidential Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, provided an update in a statement, stating, “President John Dramani Mahama today chaired a meeting of security chiefs and received a detailed briefing on investigations into the recent trafficking of drugs out of the ports of Ghana.
The President was informed that ten (10) individuals, including four officers of the Customs Division of the GRA, are being held while investigations continue.
The meeting reviewed the structure and security systems in place and recommended new actions.
President Mahama directed that an inter-agency task force be formed to present a detailed roadmap, emanating from today’s meeting, on measures to prevent the trafficking of drugs through Ghana’s borders in two weeks”.
