24-Hour Economy launch

Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, the former Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Karaga, has launched a scathing critic on the NDC-led government’s flagship project, the 24-hour economy initiative.

The former finance minister alleged that the government’s 24-hour economy remains a slogan, adding that the 24-hour economy Secretariat is in a coma as the government has not been releasing funds from the GHS110 million allocated to it this year.

He argued that the Mahama government’s failure to operationalise the secretariat raises serious concerns about the government’s commitment to its flagship policy.

In a post shared on Facebook, Dr Amin Adam wrote, “The 24-hour economy remains a slogan. I have observed a pattern where the government is forcing public agencies to operate 24 hours a day without increasing staff. A public sector approach to this policy is fundamentally flawed.

If anyone was expecting that the government would create jobs through the public sector approach, you must be reviewing your expectations because the government cannot fund it. The wage bill is 30% of the Budget (33% in 2025). Doubling the wage bill will bankrupt the country. Even the most reckless government cannot do this”.

His post stressed that the policy is a scam and dead on arrival, “The policy, if it survives, should be private sector-led, yet the government has failed to provide the incentive package promised in the 2026 Budget to the private sector almost half a year after the budget implementation.

The 24H Economy Secretariat is in a coma as the government has not been releasing funds from the GHS110 million allocated to it this year.

The policy is dead on arrival. It is a scam!” his post added.

Also, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, the Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, has told the John Mahama-led government not to reduce the 24-Hour Economy intellectual masturbation.

According to Kwsi Pratt, the 24-Hour Economy initiative risks being reduced to what he labels as ‘intellectual masturbation’ if authorities fail to act decisively.

He highlighted that the concept is not theoretical but requires immediate, practical implementation instead.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on May 6, 2026, Kwesi Pratt stated, “It should not, again, I’m going to use a word, please forgive me if it’s inappropriate… it should not be reduced to intellectual masturbation. It’s a practical thing”.

He highlighted that Ghana already has the ministries, departments and agencies capable of running round-the-clock operations, adding that the government must avoid delays caused by bureaucratic processes.

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has officially signed the 24-Hour Economy Authority Bill into law on Thursday, February 19.

The signing paves the way for the full implementation of the Mahama government’s flagship economic policy.

According to John Mahama, the 24-hour economy authority will now have to move from strategy to implementation following his signing of the bill into law.
