The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has disclosed that its Accident and Emergency Department recorded a significant increase in road traffic accident cases in the first half of 2026.
According to Korle Bu, they treated 553 victims by the end of June, which represents 7.11 per cent of the 7,781 emergency cases attended to by the department during the period.
The data show that road crash cases have been increasing steadily compared with previous years.
In the first six months of 2025, the hospital recorded 379 road traffic accident cases, representing 5.33 per cent of emergency attendancescompared to 2026’s 553.
The departmental records also disclosed that 10 accident-related deaths were recorded by the end of June 2026, representing a mortality rate of 1.81 per cent, which is a slight improvement compared with the same period in 2025, when 7 deaths were recorded from 379 road crash cases.
In other news, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, the Presidential Envoy and Chairman of the National Planning Committee, has disclosed that the government has presented a total donation of GH¢100,000 to the Korle Bu Dialysis Centre.
The Presidential Envoy and Chairman of the National Planning Committee detailed that the Presidency decided to top up the amount with an additional GH¢63,427, bringing the total donation to GH¢100,000.
According to reports, on July 13, 2026, the government donated the GH¢100,000 proceeds raised during the event to the Korle Bu Dialysis Centre.
Speaking during the presentation, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah stated, “July 1 was the maiden edition, and it also marks Ghana’s birthday. The President thought it wise that, considering the numerous blessings the good Lord has bestowed upon us, we should give thanks. I recall that when we were about to organise this event, some people questioned why we should give thanks because there had been flooding. We took an offering on that day and promised that we would donate it to the Dialysis Centre.
“This is because some of us have encountered people who were healthy and strong but were suddenly diagnosed with kidney disease. I have seen people sell their properties just to pay for treatment. We thought it was important to bring our token to the Dialysis Centre. The offering amounted to GH¢36,573”, he said.
He added, “But we decided to top it up so that we could present a round figure. So, it is GH¢100,000 that we are presenting to you, and we believe this will be neither the first nor the last”.
Elvis Afriyie Ankrah also called on corporate entities to support the cause by making donations to assist individuals battling kidney failure.
“Going forward, we will continue to support this cause. I want to use this platform to encourage other corporate entities to do the same”, he added.
The Chief Executive Officer of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr Yakubu Seidu Adam, also expressed his gratitude to the President and the organising team.
Dr Yakubu Seidu Adam stated, “We all know the consequences when patients can no longer afford dialysis services. We are also doing everything possible to improve the situation. In addition, we are strengthening our kidney transplant programme to ensure that we are able to provide the required procedures.
We are open to all forms of assistance from across the country, especially from corporate bodies. We also welcome support whenever we undertake community outreach programmes”, Dr Seidu Adam noted.
