Dennis Miracles Aboagye, spokesperson for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has said he does not feel safe under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
According to Miracles Aboagye, he fears his outspoken nature could get him into trouble, alleging that Ghana’s democratic space and freedom of expression are under threat.
He argued that Ghana’s history shows that governments eventually change, warning that political power changes hands and that actions taken against opponents while in government could set a precedent.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Wednesday, Miracles Aboagye stated, “It may be CPP, it may be PNC, be it PNP, but what you are basically telling the country is that tomorrow, when another party is in power, you see, no government will be in power forever”.
“Even the military, even with guns, even when people were being dragged from their rooms and being shot in the head in this country, there was a change of government,” he said.
He further added, “No, I haven’t said that. But I am saying that precedent becomes law. That’s why I’m speaking against it. I’m genuinely worried about it. I don’t feel safe. I won’t lie to you. I told you I’ve written to the Chief Justice. I personally, I don’t feel safe”.
“Because I talk. I can’t stop talking. I can’t. I love to talk. I love to debate,” he said.
Miracles Aboagye, however, clarified that he was not claiming his life was under threat, saying, “No, I feel my mouth will put me into trouble. That is what I feel”.
“It is not just me. So the 1000s of people who are coming on the streets tomorrow. That is how most of them feel,” he said.
“If we don’t have anything at all in Ghana, it is our free speech, it’s our democracy, it’s the fact that we are able to freely express ourselves without any fear of being targeted,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dennis Miracles Aboagye has been fingered in a GH¢5.87m fictitious procurement, GH¢19m unauthorised investment and GH¢4.3m unaccounted payment.
According to EOCO, the freezing order against Dennis Miracles Aboagye is tied to a web of allegations.
Reports suggest EOCO secured an Accra High Court order to freeze the accounts as part of investigations into the allegations of a GH¢5.87 million fictitious procurement, an unauthorised GH¢19 million public investment and an unaccounted GH¢4.3 million payment to GAPTE.
In a news card shared by TV3 quoted as saying, “The freezing order against Dennis Miracles Aboagye is tied to a web of allegations spanning a fictitious GH¢5.87 million procurement, an unauthorised GH¢19 million public investment and an unaccounted GH¢4.3 million payment to GAPTE that investigators say remains unaccounted for”.
The freezing order forms part of EOCO’s ongoing investigations into allegations against Miracles Aboagye.
