A group of Ghanaian businesswomen who are victims of an alleged GH¢13m import scam have publicly urged President Mahama, the Attorney General, and the Inspector-General of Police to intervene after a court dismissed their fraud complaint.
According to the businesswomen, the court dismissed their fraud complaint involving over GH¢13 million allegedly lost to a man promising to import goods.
One of the complainants disclosed that the suspect was arrested in March 2024 and later granted bail, with the case proceeding to court until it was dismissed on Wednesday, prompting the victims to seek intervention from the authorities.
Speaking in a viral video, the victims outside Dansoman Circuit Court in Accra, where one woman in sunglasses passionately voiced their frustration, stated, “This is a public appeal to the IGP, His Excellency the President, and the Attorney General. We are women; we worked in Ghana, and some came to us that he was selling some goods we gathered our money and also other people’s money and gave the money to him to import the goods for us.
He presented himself as an agent, over GH¢13million, that is over 130 billion old cedis. We are standing at the Dansoman court; the man was arrested on 18 March 2024 and was granted bail. Since then, every time we come to court, the case is adjourned, and today, August 6, the case has been dismissed”.
“People have died, people’s marriages have also ended, and their businesses have been ruined; some have also gone into hiding because of this issue. Over 130 billion old cedis, and he is still in Ghana walking free. Since 2024, they have been conducting an investigation. Are we going to allow this person to go scot-free? We understand the wheel of justice is slow, but this one has stopped; they are acquitting the person.
Please help us so that our issue will get to the President and other leaders. We reported the case at the Central Police Station in Accra, and he was arrested and is now walking free while we are struggling to pay our debts”.
Meanwhile, TrustGH (trustgh.com), Ghana’s first public database for scam phone numbers, has recorded over 3,000 reports of suspicious numbers since its launch, the company announced today.
TrustGH is a licensed platform and works closely with the Cybersecurity Authority and the Cyber Crime Unit of the Ghana Police Service to combat scam activity and support ongoing investigations into reported numbers.
TrustGH is urging the public to verify any unfamiliar phone number on trustgh.com before making payments, sharing personal information, or engaging in business transactions, and to report suspicious numbers to help strengthen the platform’s database.
In related news, John Awuah, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Bankers Association, has said that when it comes to fraud, nobody is safe.
The CEO of the Banks Association, during a forum, revealed that he was scammed right after a live studio lecture on fraud.
He disclosed that he lost GH₵67 through the fraudulent act.
According to him, anyone can become a victim of a scam regardless of their knowledge or position.
Speaking in a video shared by JoyNews, John Awuah made the revelation at the Digital Economy Forum, saying, “To be honest, now when I’m saying that, I even get scared because there was a day I was at Joy FM studio to give public education on cyber fraud and just after the studio, when I sat in the car, I got defrauded of GH₵67”.
He explained that fraudsters target people from all backgrounds, adding that no one should assume they are protected because they are educated or experienced.
“I think when I left [the studio after the show], they said, let’s try this guy. It tells you when it comes to fraud, nobody is safe. Nobody,” he added.
John Awuah warned that some people underestimate the risk of fraud because they believe their level of education makes them less likely to be targeted.
“So, the danger we are having in this country is that there are people who believe they are immune. It’s like their level of education kind of takes them out of the fraud,” he added.
