Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has sued the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, over allegations made against him by the CEO of GoldBod, who accused him of being an extortionist.

Afenyo-Markin, in a separate lawsuit, also sued Eric Adjei, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), who also accused him of being an extortionist on Peace FM.

Speaking when Parliament reconvened on Monday, August 24, 2026, the Minority leader revealed he has initiated legal proceedings against Mr Gyamfi and media organisations that published or broadcast the statements in question.

Afenyo-Markin stated, “I have accordingly caused writs to be filed in Suit Number GT/1029/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Samuel Adu Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited at the Accra High Court, and Suit Number GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Eric Adjei and Peace FM at the Achimota Circuit Court”.

“I have every confidence that in the fullness of time the court will make the appropriate determination,” he added.

The legal action follows weeks of public exchanges between the Minority Leader and the GoldBod CEO over the financial performance of the DGPP, while Afenyo-Markin had appeared to have softened his earlier threat to pursue legal action over allegations made by Sammy Gyamfi.

The Minority leader on JoyNews’ The Probe on Sunday evening, August 23, declined to commit himself to legal action, instead invoking the biblical example of Jesus Christ.

According to Afenyo-Markin, in the Bible, Jesus was accused with wild allegations, but he kept quiet and watched them.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Probe, Afenyo-Markin stated, “I have made certain statements. I would rely on them without more. Don’t rush. In the Bible, Jesus was accused; wild allegations. He kept quiet and watched them. He could have done anything.”

“But you see, when you are dealing with situations, the people of Ghana expect a certain level of maturity from me. The people of Ghana see that this is an accomplished businessman. He’s been in the space for some time. He’s leading a group. The tradition of the party NPP that I lead expects a certain level of conduct.”

“So if I would be carried away with emotions, I would fail. It’s not an emotional game. It’s not a game that somebody attacks you, you should also react. No, you won’t get it.”

“There is always a bait in politics, and don’t underestimate it. Opponents also have a strategy,” he added.

“I was a majority leader. I know how government operates. I know how government can divert attention. So I’ve been there. Because the government must hold itself together, so it can be thrown in today’s social media. Let’s divert attention. Let’s stain the man.”

The development follows Sammy Gyamfi, who defended his decision to describe Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin as an “extortionist”.

According to Sammy Gyamfi, his comment was made based on underlying issues between him and Afenyo-Markin which are not known to the public.

Sammy Gyamfi on Joy News’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, August 22, 2026, disclosed that he had never used the term against any of his other critics, arguing that his choice of words was based on specific matters involving Afenyo-Markin.

Sammy Gyamfi on Newsfile stated, “You see, my brother, there are many underlying issues between Afenyo-Markin and me that you don’t know, and those watching don’t know. I have appeared on Newsfile too many times. Perhaps in this country I have held more press conferences on political issues than anybody”.

“Have you ever heard me use the word extortion against any of my critics? Have you ever heard me? Why would I use this word now? And why have you not heard Afenyo say anything about that, or challenge me, or threaten to sue? So, the NPP people talking; there are things you don’t know,” he added.

According to Sammy Gyamfi, Afenyo-Markin had not publicly rebutted the allegation because he knows the claim to be true, adding that the absence of a legal challenge or direct response from the Effutu MP was significant.

“I will not just… Me, I’m a consummate democrat. I eat and drink debates. Yes, and that is why he cannot comment on that or even challenge me. He cannot, because he knows that what I said is true. So, there are many things that you may not have the benefit of,” he stated.

“Tell him that you want to be his lawyer so that he sues Sammy Gyamfi to substantiate that claim. Tell him. Or tell him that you will give him an interview here and Sammy Gyamfi will come, and that he should dare Sammy Gyamfi,” he said.

“That is not an insult. I’m speaking about what has happened, and he knows.” Gyamfi concluded.
