Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Government Spokesperson, has announced that Land preparation has begun for the construction and equipping of a modern 400-bed Mother and Child Block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
According to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the modern facility is expected to replace the hospital’s old maternity unit and improve healthcare services for pregnant women, mothers and newborn babies.
He disclosed that the project forms part of the Mahama government’s plan to improve major health facilities and provide better conditions for patients and health workers.
In a post on X on September 21, 2026, Spokesperson to the President Felix Kwakye Ofosu stated, “President Mahama is back with investments in major, world-class health infrastructure.
Land preparation has begun for the construction and equipping of a modern 400-bed Mother and Child Block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to replace the dilapidated Maternity Unit.
This new block will provide specialised departments and units including:
• Obstetrics and Gynaecology Wards
• Labour and Delivery Suites
• Operating Theatres
• Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
• High Dependency Unit (HDU)
• Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
• IVF and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre
• Antenatal and Postnatal Clinics
• Fertility and Reproductive Health Clinics
• Breastfeeding and Family Planning Units • Emergency Obstetric Care Unit
• Diagnostic Imaging Department
• Laboratory and Blood Bank Facilities
• Pharmacy Department
• Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD)
• Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Units
• Teaching, Research, and Conference Facilities”.
The development of follows, President John Dramani Mahama has revealed plans to replace the ageing maternity block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital with a modern facility.
According to John Mahama, the plan forms part of his government’s efforts to strengthen maternal healthcare services.
John Mahama, speaking at the commissioning of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory at the National Cardiothoracic Centre on Thursday, made the announcement.
He revealed that the procurement process for the new maternity block is already underway.
President Mahama highlighted that the existing Gordon-Guggisberg maternity building has outlived its usefulness and no longer provides.
He noted that the Korle Bu maternity building is not a safe environment for mothers, newborns and health workers, describing the structure as hazardous.
Mahama stressed that the facility poses serious safety risks, adding that it will be demolished once work begins on the replacement project.
According to Mahama, improving healthcare delivery requires more than funding medical treatment, adding that quality healthcare also depends on modern, safe and well-equipped health facilities.
