Victoria Hammah, a former Deputy Minister of Communications and prominent NDC member, has slammed Ghanaians on social media criticising Ghana’s First Lady, Lordina Mahama, over her fluency in the country’s official language, English.
According to Victoria Hammah, the job of the First Lady is to serve the people of Ghana and not to demonstrate fluency in the English language.
In a social media post on September 24, 2026, to add her voice to the brouhaha, Victoria Hammah argued that Ghana should rethink its obsession with what she described as “good English.”

“I struggled in the Czech Republic because English isn’t their dominant language. Perhaps Ghana should rethink its obsession with ‘good English.’ Our obsession with flawless spoken English is a colonial hangover. The First Lady’s job is to serve the people, not to pass an English examination.”
Victoria Hammah’s comments come on the heels of criticism from some social media users who have taken aim at Lordina Mahama over her command of the English language.
Some Ghanaians on social media have been sharing clips from Lordina Mahama’s previous public engagements, making mockery of her English-language delivery.
Netizens sharing clips of the video stated, “First Lady’s (H.E. Lordina Mahama) speech at the OAFLAD as part of the 81st UN session.
Hmmmmmmmm”.
Another stated, “Don’t let Ghana Jollof see this video else Mahama will arrest another innocent nursing mother. But Lordina to wosop. She has no formal education ana cos eii First Lady paaa nie”.
Meanwhile, some Ghanaians reacting to Victoria Hammah’s remarks stated, “A few months ago u guys were mocking NPP for Wontumi chairmanship. Becos is involved Mahama’s wife we should forget the content”.
“But you guys were on Wontumi’s neck not long ago. Or……”, a netizen added.
A Facebook user added, “A country that chooses English as its official language is now saying obsession with flawless spoken English is a colonial hangover. Heeerrr”.
“And you think it was the English that was her problem? In any case, was she forced to mount the podium at all cost?”, another Ghanaian added.
“ENGLISH IS GHANA’S FIRST LANGUAGE. FOR A SUPPOSEDLY MASTER’S DEGREE HOLDER IN COURSES TAUGHT IN ENGLISH, THE ADAGE TO WHOM MUCH IS GIVEN, MUCH IS EXPECTED APTLY APPLIES”, a netizen added.
“There is something we call a speech defect; it has to do with speech and not necessarily a particular language. In other words, it may affect any language depending on the defects. No one has power over this; you can only undergo training or therapy to minimise it. That even depends on how early you start this intervention. Just educating you”, a Facebooker added.
One last netizen wrote, “I don’t think anyone is interested in whether or not she’s an English scholar. But so far as English remains Ghana’s official language and she chooses to use it instead of any of our local languages on an international stage, then she must get it right”.
