Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, has torn into the John Mahama government’s latest cocoa producer price announcement.
The Minority Chief Whip described the new farm-gate price as evidence of what he called the administration’s failure to meet the expectations created among farmers.
According to Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the scales of the John Mahama government’s deception have been removed.
In a social media post reacting to the announcement, Annoh-Dompreh wrote, “Cocoa new farm gate price: GH¢2650! Now, the ‘scales’ of deception have been removed. This govt. will contend with us & our cocoa farmers once more!”
His comment follows, the Chief Executive of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Ransford Abbey, has announced that the government has increased the producer price of cocoa from GH¢41,392 to GH¢42,400 per tonne for the 2026/2027 crop season.
The increase in the producer price of cocoa gives farmers a GH¢1,008 increase over the previous season.
Also, the new price translates into GH¢2,650 for a 64-kilogramme bag of cocoa and represents 71.18 per cent of the realised gross free-on-board (FOB) price.
Ransford Abbey disclosed that the new producer price in Accra on Friday (Sept 25) as he declared the 2026/2027 cocoa season open.
He revealed that the new price had been agreed following consultations among COCOBOD, the Ministry of Finance, cocoa farmers and stakeholders represented by the Chamber of Cocoa Marketers.
The cocoa price adjustment comes as the cocoa sector undergoes reforms aimed at improving the financial sustainability of COCOBOD while protecting the incomes of cocoa farmers.
Also, the new pricing framework follows the passage of the Ghana Cocoa Board Act, 2026, which provides for an automatic adjustment mechanism linked to international cocoa prices, exchange rates, and other relevant factors, but guarantees farmers receive at least 70 per cent of the gross FOB price.
In related news, some weeks ago reports suggested Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire have signed a landmark agreement to harmonise cocoa producer pricing policies.
According to the joint statement, the move is to improve farmers’ incomes, stabilise the market, and strengthen cooperation between the world’s two largest cocoa-producing countries.
Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minister for Finance, announced the decision on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, after the 7th Meeting of the Steering Committee of the Côte d’Ivoire-Ghana Cocoa Initiative (CIGCI), held in Abidjan.
Ghana’s Finance Minister stated, “The two countries agreed to harmonise farm gate prices through some measures”.
He disclosed that the agreement includes stronger market cooperation through enhanced collaboration between trading rooms, increased data sharing, and the harmonisation of crop year calendars.
Also, the two countries agreed to align the principles used in determining cocoa prices to reduce disparities in producer prices.
Dr Ato Forson also disclosed that Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire had agreed to officially harmonise their cocoa crop calendars beginning with the 2026/2027 marketing season, which will run from September 1 to August 31.
